Redistribution as a means of retirement is impossible. Either you save your whole life, or retirement without work is impossible. Social Security was originally designed so that the vast majority of people would DIE before reaching the age you could qualify for it. Thus, the cost was obtainable.
Sadly, people actually have come to believe that you can tax people to pay our current benefits, and you can't. The burden is simply unsustainable.
So, yes, retirement age for SS benefits MUST rise, or the nation goes bankrupt. Further, it should be gotten rid of completely, being phased out over 25 years or so. It was an incredibly stupid idea to begin with, and the proof is in the fact it simply cannot be made to work anymore. People MUST save for their own retirement. That's the only working system for retirement.
