   Why does it seem that there are less wars than there actually are? Why a lack of publicity for them?

   Do you mean globally? 
   
   There are actually fewer people killing each other in wars now than in any time in world history.  But war doesn't sell a lot of newspapers or get a lot of ratings unless people feel that they have some stake in it.  So people only care about wars that their countries are involved in. 
   
   But even then, once a war has been going on for about a decade, like two current US wars, people kind of get used to it.

   Why would anyone want to publicize a war, or whatever the military action is called?   I am not sure of this; but, it appears that publicity only gets in the way of the people running wars.  It certainly does not play well in places with free press, at least for politicians.

   There are no shortages of wars these days.
   At any given time there are something like 30 conflicts globally.
   But many of them are either so sporadic, like the African wars, or have been going on so long, like the South American wars, that nobody who isn't affected really cares very much.
   At pretty much any chosen time 1/2 of the African continent is at war, same for the Middle East. Wars in South America, like the one that has been going on for 45 years in Colombia, have broken down into something closer to narco terrorism. The goals of ruling countries have been replaced with goals of making money.
   Of course there are also cold wars, Korea, and wars that one side sees as finished, China / Tibet / Taiwan.
   Don't forget the "other" conflicts like Russia / Chechen.
   All in all there is no shortage of dying going on. But if Israel and the Palestine's are fighting this week who cares? We know that they will be fighting next week.

   I have read your question at least 4 times.........
   
   It is obvious, that I am missing your point........you apparently know something that I do not.   For, it seems that everywhere I read, there is a report of a war, a revolution, a struggle for independence, an outcry gone violent, across the globe.
   
   Nations against nations, countries divided, struggles in the streets, massive protests............it is a global concern, and yet, you tell me, there is MORE, than it appears?
   
   
   
   If it is as you say...............then perhaps the answer is this simple.........

   If there is oil and gas reserves in a country then the war will be publicized a lot because USA needs oil and sends it's military to major oil zones in the world to try and control the supply. If you are in a country like Rwanda where there is no oil then millions of people get die and the press does not pay too much attention.
