Why do we seek others approval on decisions we make as adults?

As adults, aren't we strong enough and sure enough of ourselves to make decisions about our lives without needing the approval of anyone? As long as our decision is what we truly believe and is legal, why should we be so concerned about what others think about how we live and what we do? My life is my life and right wrong or indifferent I should be able to decide how I live without needing approval of friends and family.

I would say that part is YES and part NO. At times we make decisions that if we followed through we would fall in a pit and regret. Many of the decisions we make and believe are right, there is no need to seek approval but some like wanting to invest in foreign stock exchange, we would need (not necessarily approval) advice. This is the same with marriage. But an important thing to note is that we should be careful to weigh what we are told. They may mean well but if you look through it, Nah!

Only reason is the lack of self confidence.
I think seeking advice on what TV to buy or how to pick out and hang the best drapes for your bedroom is a different category and not what you're talking about here.
Good self confidence comes from the experience and positive reinforcement we receive all throughout life.  In general people develop their foundation of self confidence in their formative years as a child so in my opinion what your parents did to you and for you is crucial.  Therefore in general the people you that lack confidence and second guess things to death probably had parents who didn't do the best job for some reason.  Notice I said "in general" because there's always the exception.  So for most people that had good parents they are generally able to make a decision without being crippled by a lack of approval from others.
