What role do you think US corporations play in our Democracy?
Many of us know that big business frequently offers bribes throughout our political system in order to gain influence and to expand their own interests. This question is to find out what the average person feels the role they play is and how much of an effect it has our votes. Views from both sides pro business and any other would be greatly appreciated.
Don't know where you are posting from, dc11, but I don't think outright bribery is that big an issue in most Western countries.
However, campaign contributions, ever-more concentrated media ownership and ever-more sophisticated spin doctoring are (IMO) distorting public policy. Big Business is not the only culprit, but they are far and away the biggest.
Big business and big government are just different faces of the same establishment. It isn't that business bribes an otherwise good government to do bad things, or that corrupt government bullies otherwise good businessmen to. It's that the line of separation between them is fictitious. Institutionalized corporations are part of the state, and authoritarian government works hand in glove with them, and protects them, just as it does its own official agencies. One can't exist without the other. You can't reform one without dealing with the other.
There is no democracy, the US are ruled by the big corporations.

The conservatives (across party lines) of this country want to privatize everything. This trend is a corporate-funded push to kill government with its pesky regulations and rules and turn the country completely over to big business. Privatize social security and you get anything but social...
