For the most part, very little, but it is more the documentaries that influenced people to avoid or resist the draft. Those who bought into the US war against communism willingly enlisted to go to Vietnam. Movies tend to glorify war, whereas documentaries are more likely to show the real horrors. But even here, the full truth is not told. That has to be investigated separately with an analysis as to why there is such heavy economic investment in all things pertaining to war and defense.

Maybe for some it was a way to emulate the old Army mascot, the donkey!

syzygyastro  I couldn't agree with you more!  I do think that there was an element for some of the men who enlisted in Vietnam that they owed it to their fathers.  In "Tim's" case, his father had landed on the beaches of Normandy and my father had been proud to serve in World War II.  Movies like "From Here to Eternity" and John Wayne movies glorified war more than movies like "All Quiet on the Western Front".  I was glad many of us resisted the "pull" of the "romance" of war and started to question the morality of what we were doing at the time.

Very good question. Excellent, in fact.

I am a veteran of the Vietnam War and I must say that my watching "World War II movies" when I was a young child motivated and inspired me to be a good soldier in that conflict.

Those movies are one of the things that instilled a deep sense of patriotism into me.
