I am not totally against hunting. It is a natural part of man's psyche to hunt in some form or another, even just for the fun of it. I am not saying it is desirable or acceptable to inflict cruel sport on any living thing. If we are to regard ourselves as "civilised" and "enlightened," then we must learn to use our better judgment and act responsibly.
Sadly, there are ignorant, ill-educated and selfish individuals who cannot, or will not, abide by humanity principles, and society needs to have laws/regulations in place to prevent such cruelty as much as possible. With the increasing world population of humans, this regulation is becoming more and more difficult. What do we do about it? I have no solution. Except maybe if the vocal group who insist upon culling were to allow themselves to be culled, this would help rid the world of superfluous humans!
There is another aspect to look at. Here in Australia we have heard of individuals in America and Canada crying out in protest at the culling of kangaroos because, they say, the kangaroo is an icon of the Australian continent, and it's cruel on the animals. It seems they are unaware of the facts: kangaroos have multiplied enormously, beyond the "natural" order, because of the way we humans have managed the land. When vegetation diversity is reduced, mallee roots dug up, low scrub cleared, to make way for pasture suitable for livestock, this provides a very convenient source of food for kangaroos. They multiply at an enormous rate. In a further part of the cycle, when a drought occurs, the animals die out because of starvation.... a very cruel way to die!
I suggest that careful, sensible culling is acceptable and the meat should be used for human consumption.
Finally, for you people in the United States of America, you would be well advised to do your own careful, scientific research in relation to your own country. Listen to the locals. Their views are relevant. Then listen to the reports. Then act wisely for the long-term benefit of everyone, not just humans.
We in Australia must do the same.
