   According to this page, http://www.wnd.com/2009/04/94803/ , it seems there was a report that outlined that the supporters of "Ron Paul"-type candidates were labeled "right-wing extremists".
   However, I have not found any other sources to corroborate the existance of this report, or anything about people who own gold. I do intend to keep looking though.

   Fear mongering has become so rampant in our country that nothing surprises me anymore.  I don't know the legitimate answer to your question but I'm sure the major media outlets will have a field day with news like this.  You have certainly inspired my curious nature to do some digging.

   I suppose you are talking about the Jan 31 study referred to in the links from the comments already posted completed under a grant given by the DHS.  I have to read the report but the first thing I did notice was the following disclaimer:
   
   "The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or START."
   
   With START being The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) [and] is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, tasked by the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate with using state-of-the-art theories, methods, and data from the social and behavioral sciences to improve understanding of the origins, dynamics, and social and psychological impacts of terrorism. START, based at the University of Maryland, College Park, aims to provide timely guidance on how to disrupt terrorist networks, reduce the incidence of terrorism, and enhance the resilience of U.S. society in the face of the terrorist threat.
   The authors of this report are Gary LaFree, director of START and professor of criminology at the University of Maryland, and Bianca Bersani, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.    BTW, the definition of a terrorist act is: terrorist attack - "a surprise attack involving the deliberate use of violence against civilians in the hope of attaining political or religious aims"

   Hubris is the dominant emotion in the Obama camp. They sincerely believe they have at last overthrown the old regime of eevul righties, freed the people from the oppression of capitalist warmongers, and are ushering in the Age of Aquarius. It is a looney leftie orgy.
   
   Just like one issued by Napolitano in the early months of the administration, this report is an attempt to use the tools of the Patriot Act to have local law enforcement authorities harass groups the administration sees as seditious to its rule. Oppressing supporters of the former oppressors is the order of the day. It was a revealing act then, and it is now. The Obama crowd really does think of themselves as liberators. That they themselves go beyond the hated political tactics used by those eevul righties just sails over their heads. Hypocrisy is never apparent to the hypocrite. Their more fanatical fans feel the report is right on target, but when the earlier one backfired it was one of the administration's first lessons in the fact this is a pluralistic society. By now, their on-the-job training has taught them to be more discreet, but apparently not well. After all, they've done it again.
   
   The proposition Obama supporters have learned the highest lesson, that their leaders are misguided, incompetent and naive, not the prophets of a new order, is doubtful. This being campaign season they certainly will not behave as if they have, and their sociopolitical fantasies being so deeply ingrained in their world view they well may not have at all. As long as they are booted far away from the power they have so abused and never allowed to get anywhere near it again, how they feel about it won't matter.

      Actually, Attikos, I won't push back very hard on the hubris swipe, I sort of agree.  The rest of it is demogogoric (is that a word?) hyperole, of course.  You have another truism in there, however, about hypocrisy is never apparent to the hypocrite.

   In a never-ending war against a method  - everybody is suspect when profiling includes normal everyday activities - including buying 'Pop-tarts'. It's just a way to detain you (not arrest - you would have more rights if arrested) - for any reason, at anytime.

      I am, among other things, a statistician, but am uncertain what your comment means. Is it that you are suggesting that no more thought goes into it that throwing a bunch of numbers into a regression program and using the results unanalyzed by humans?

   Not all Ron Paul supporters are extremists, but most extremists like Ron Paul. I like Ron Paul simply because he is an anti-imperialist. Certainly it is the unwritten policy of the media to supress him and his message since he is popular. It is also important for them to make his supporters look like idiots or extremists. I participated in an automated poll by phone the other day and, when asked for whom I planned to vote for president, it would not allow me to select the option 4 that was offered: "Other". The other options were "Republican", "Democrat", or "Undecided". I just hung up on it. But it was chilling. The government and media gets like this every four years at election time prior to the conventions and then things go back to normal afterwards--as long as there is no 3rd-party candidate running.
   
   Hard-core Christians who have started homeschooling, stopped watching tv, buy up gold, move to Montana and Idaho, own guns, and grow their own organic food are under the microscope of the Department of Justice. Traditionally, that's the quarter from which the government has been threatened the most in terms of zeal and numbers. It's the guns, the religious zealotry, and the large communes that draw attention.There are so many of them that it may even be the next civil war since the ruling class is so anti-religious right now in its attempt to keep up with European education. Remember when the Michigan militia got tossed a few years ago? Media didn't report it. The ordinary hippie progressives and the Tea Party conservatives don't bother anyone in the government. And tons of people started buying gold and now the price is declining. The ruling class can affect the price of gold if it wants by flooding the market through sales or printing less money.
