yes and no. The American dream is to be able to come here, or be born here, and make your way inthe world and create your own living (i believe). That is very possible here, however, once one gets to a certain point it becomes corrupt.
I am very fortunate to live in a very creative area just north of Seattle, and the people around me are truly inspiring. I have a friend who is supporting herself and her son by making jewelry and selling it on e-bay. I have another friend who earns his income by throwing festivals because he enjoys live music. I am involved with Think Piece Productions which was created by a couple of gentle men with no money, and now they're making their living off it.
However, America is what you put into it. If you want to work hard, and create your own income, you can do it. If you want it to just be served to you, well, that's not going to happen.
Also, those wanting to come to America are willing to work for a lower wages because usually where they come from, the wages are far less, and the work conditions are poor. This way they can at least get treated better, in theory.
