Why do we continue to give aid to other countries when our own economy is in a tailspin?

When I listen to the news and hear how much aid we give to other countries, I wonder what our government is thinking when our own economy is in such turmoil.  Shouldn't our economy be healthy first before we provide aid to other countries?

Aid to other countries can be a matter of foreign policy and not charity which is why we still give aid to certain countries and not others, even when our economy is not so great.

The "aid" is a form of bribery to foreign governments within the US sphere of influence. Most of it is for weapons. Very little of it goes for medical or food for the people of those countries. We provide it to keep those countries' governments on our side. It's not that we are afraid of these countries. It's that certain US companies want what's in those countries: resources or cheap labor. I agree that we should not pay it.

Some countries are not able to look after all their people for many reasons including war, famine, earthquake, drought etc etc.
Even though the US economy may not be as healthy as it would like to be it's still a lot healthier than many countries.

I admit there are often political resons for some foreign aid but even if the motivation for giving is not the best I think it's still better to give than not... just ask the orphaned starving children in Africa..i really don't think they care about politics.. they just want a regular feed, an education and a chance to have a life.

The US generally gives aid to a nation that can preserve our interests in the region.
    It's not necessarily free money.
