In light of the shooting in Connecticut today, what can be done to keep our children safe at school?
Should we fund, through the government, money to safeguard the schools through new entrances featuring guards and bullet proof glass and secure doors? Should the schools themselves, or the community, fund such as this? Or should we stand blithely by until it happens in our town? In addition, is gun control the answer; or is something else the answer?
Schools, office buildings and all other public gathering places can be fortified to the limits of the available resources, and it still won't stop the madness. Evil can get to us in too many ways. We can't close off all of them. Short of a renewal of guiding principle in this secularized, atomistic, ethicsless society, nothing will change it. A religious revival will be necessary before behavior can improve.
Yes, this seems to be the only way forward. School killings are now a world wide phenomenon - not restricted to the USA - and the realistic response has to be fences, gates and security.
It's sad, tragic, unfortunate, but guns are so easily purchased nowadays and schools so easily targeted that deterrence is the only thing we can do. It has to happen and it should be a nationwide effort. Rogue killers will continue to shoot innocent kids, teachers, educators if these steps aren't taken soon. I know it sounds awful - schools and colleges resembling prisons - but what other safeguards can be implemented?
Guns are now part and parcel of every day life - if not in actual real time in mindset time - and they can be bought easily on the internet one way or another - so they're not going away anytime soon. Better to guarantee safety with money for security packages - or expect more killing sprees in the future.
The best solution that I know is to home school my children. While I would appreciate being able to allow her to attend a private school the way that we had planned, this isn't a problem of the public schools, but of the schools generally.
Fortifications sound like a good idea until you take into consideration that the funding to fortify the schools has to come from somewhere. This money either gets added into tuition or it comes from raising property taxes in order to fund the fortifications of the public schools.
Gun control appears to be an easy solution, but it's impossible to keep guns out of the hands of criminals who will steal them, produce them, or otherwise hide them. It only serves to keep the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens who use their guns to protect themselves from the dangers and the evils of the world.
If there is a solution to this problem, I don't personally have it, other than to have parents home school their children. It isn't a complete solution, however, as schools aren't the only locations where this sort of crime is committed. Crazy people will always find a forum for their craziness, and it doesn't matter whether it's schools or the town square. The only real difference between the two is that we get more upset when it's a child who dies than we do if it's an adult.
A family that I know, pulled their daughter out of school and is now home schooling here. There was a shooting incident in her school about six weeks ago. This incident in CT was the final straw for them.

Often I've seen the argument here on these forums about the state of our children's education. Almost always ignoring the fact that the pandemic will have impacts on proficiency scores for years to come. But what of our nations adults? Adults represented by every generation after the millennials....

It is a very personally matter that should be made individually. So it really bugs me when evangelical parents send their kids to...
