Do you think a world government would be effective in uniting mankind?

I often wonder if a global government would work and would love to hear everyone's input on this.

Do you think it is at all possible? How could we make it work?

No I think a world government would create higher taxes and higher costs. I'm all for localizing government though bringing mankind to unity and peace is important.

I think a world government is a possibility but it would be a long and arduous process to establish one. If administered well,  it could definitely create a better world for all of mankind. I see someone like Nelson Mandela leading us all.

Sleepylog I'm not against government but these days government brings up things  like brutality and dictatorship as synonyms. 'I think what you are really talking about is  world government that is led by compassionate caring values.

Not really... I can imagine all of the respresentatives who would die because they would represent a country. Lots of war because one country proposes a law and others don't agree. Hectic, hectic.

Yes but what if there were no more countries? All borders were abolished and people were free to come and go as they please all around the world. It's the borders that create disunity. We're all of the same race, the planet belongs to all of us.

It would take centuries until we get to the point that countries are forgotten. Think of the civil war. Some still believe the South should secede from the U.S. ...Is there no bias where you live?

Of course there is bias, I'm talking hypothetically... we're all allowed to dream and have visions aren't we? All great things started from visions.

No, but it would be effective in enslaving mankind. Nation-states are brutal, mindless institutions devoid of all human ethic, and one of the few things keeping them from reaching total depravity is competition from other nation-states. Global government would remove that obstacle. Doing so is a terrible idea.

No the only way for mankind to have a united one world government that keeps the interests of the masses as it's intentions would be if we all had a common enemy. Any other scenario would just degrade into ruling factions and tyranny like government of any kind usually does. In a world government the people's voices would be virtually non-existant, meaning decisions of a few powerful people would decide the fate of billions, that never works out to be a good thing.
