What will it be like in 2057?

Given there are twice the number of people alive to day than 45 years ago, what will it be like in 2057? Confucius confusions | Do you have any answers to this modern question that would have baffled the wisest sages of old?

Hey! But chimps also make tools. The idea that humans are the only tool makers was proven wrong in the 1960s. As for reducing birth rates, how are we going to get the holy nutcases of our planet to go along with that!?

"I do not think this trajectory of growth is going to continue unabated."

You're right, it simply can't. There's a paper extrapolating current growth rates in energy use, showing that the curve would lead to absurd results very fast.

If the sea lions are starving why not reduce fishing and begin sea lion hunting? What do sea lions taste like?

LOTS of places where growing your own food is out. Maybe you could grow herbs in a window box in the centre of Manhattan but that's about it. The same for the heart of Sydney or London.

Saw the movie when it first came out. Good movie. Good choice. Soylent Green or Make Room! Make Room!, the novel it is based on, also has something to say about the future.

A lot of truth in this, but I wonder about the ozone layer prediction--the Montreal protocol seems to be working pretty well, and most expect considerable ozone layer recovery in the coming decades.

Too many idiots in the world and alternate energy can only be half the answer anyway.
