What would you do if your cleaning lady turned out to be an illegal alien after years of service?
I'd hope she'd keep providing great service, and keep paying her. I'd respect the fact that she traveled from home to work for a better life.
Human migration is constant..it never stops. Some two bit suite receiving corporate donations to fund his election to the legislature, and then passing some silly writ on paper means nothing to me. It means nothing to human nature either. The US legislature does nothing but create laws for agendas...for the wealthy, who else but the wealthiest among us has the money to fund someone's election?
Laws are never synonymous with "morality," or "the right thing to do." In fact, very often, laws contradict human behaviors that will never be changed...and only do so so that the enforcement of said law will make somebody somewhere more wealthy.
I never ask myself, "is this legal?" I often do wonder, however, whether or not I'm doing what is moral.
Are you asking if you're obligated to report that information if you only recently found out? Or are you meaning from the moral/ethical standpoint of having built a working relationship with the cleaning lady? That's a tough one, because if you didn't "care", then you could easily call immigration and report it. But who knows what the situation is for her personally, so you might be best speaking to her about it directly and gauge it from there. Does she work independently or as part of a cleaning company?? A company would pretty much crack down and have her deported if that were the case. You might want to consult with an attorney, otherwise you may find yourself stuck in the middle of her immigration case.
I think the moral/ legal / what should be legal/ opinion is what I am looking for. You do break down the question well into interesting nuances that need to be considered!
If I had a cleaning "person" for years, then most likely I would have had an established relationship with this individual. Mutual trust and respect had been cemented during these years of interaction. Consequently, if I knew a person of long standing with me was an illegal immigrant, I would first give them a raise and secondly act as though nothing different had happened. A person who works hard is an individual to be admired, no matter what country they are from.
Oh, goodness. You seem like such a nice man to be worrying about this issue. I'm sure it is not deliberate that you've asked the question under your real name with details of your whereabouts on your home page ..but if I was in your position I think the first thing I'd be doing is telling her you're sorry if things get complicated. (However I like to think this is just one of those 'hypothetical' questions at the moment, asked on behalf of a friend.)
In a general response to this type of question, I would be doing research about the various options available to you and her. I would ask if I could sponsor her into the country or write a character reference or take any action at all that would help her because she's honest and trustworthy and simply in need of some help. But I wouldn't make those phone calls to authorities from my home telephone or cell phone that could be tracked back to me. And I would do internet searches from a public library.
Oh, what a dilemma. Life can seem so unfair at times. I feel for you, and I feel for your c/l if you have one. It is dreadful to be placed in such a difficult position, I know what my heart says, but sometimes I have to listen to my head.
oh lets be clear, i don't have a cleaning lady i know to be an illegal alien...I do have a cleaning lady but I don't know either way her citizenship. I was just wondering on a philosophical basis
Phew, that's good news. I was hoping it was just one of those random hypothetical questions. Still, I won't be surprised if you get an unexpected knock on the door.
I would say to myself, "that explains why she works so hard, does such a good job, and is willing to work for such low wages without ever complaining." I just summed up for you the reason why the neocons don't really want to stop illegal immigration.
Nothing. I would encourage her to make her citizenship legit and accommodate any changes in her schedule for classes. If she was law-abiding (other than the citizenship thing) and hard-working, I can understand her wanting a better life for her and her family. Besides, even with the economy like this, many Americans turn their noses up at that kind of work. I guess that that is why I've always thought it was ridiculous that people get so worked up about immigrants taking jobs....yeah. Jobs these same hot heads would never do or would ever want their loved ones to do. Anyway...I got off on a tangent. If she refused to go to through with getting citizenship I would have to consider letting her go to protect myself, legally.
I understand the harm illegal immigration can cause for the big picture, but when I look at each individual I can not say that I wouldn't do the same thing if the roles were reversed. If I was in poverty and knew that a job that would provide for my whole family was just a few miles away I'd do whatever I could to get thru those few miles. I would work as soon and as much as I could. My heart says one thing while my brain and US law says another.
I would keep my mouth shut and hope to enjoy her for many more years. I would be glad I could make her life better.
Report her to INS - the law is the law and no one should be above it, even if she is a great employee, has a nice personality, etc. etc.

Hoopla. Most of the people these days are trying so hard to be politically correct and refused to call a person who entered the United States illegally an "Illegal Alien" for fear of being branded as "racist". For me, if you're illegal, you are illegal. No sugar coating, no...

I bet the authors of these two quotes will be quickly identified, but the real question is... what is so wrong with what they say?"America's immigration system is outdated, unsuited to the needs of our economy and to the values of our country. We should not be content with laws that punish...

DACA was only supposed to be a temporary solution originated by Obama. Why did anyone living underDACA never take the initiative to apply for US citizenship? They had plenty of time and now they are crying. I would just like to know why they didn't move in that direction.
