Do you think KINDLE is a little early exploiting gay marriage in their advertizements?
I live in Ohio where gay marriage is not yet legal. Yet I'm seeing ads on T.V. of a man refering to another man as his husband. I'm not against gay marriage, but exploitation before it's even legal, I am. Marijuana will probably be legal someday here. Should they advertize rolling papers now? They advertized gambling rehab before our first casino opened. Gay marriage is not a coming attraction or opening soon gala. It's serious stuff whether you agree with it or not. Media, in all forms, have overstepped it's boundries.
Yes, especially because it is not legal in so many states and there is no guarantee that it will be legalized.
Not really. I'm in Texas, we don't really support gay marriage. But I love the subtle commercial. It's actually kind of sweet. Amazon using gay marriage in their commercial is a sign of stepping into a new world, innovation, which is often admired in high technology and new social areas.
I've known and seen lots of people refer to their partner as husband or wife even though they don't have a piece of paper that has been approved of by the All High Moral Guardians of Virtue. Similarly, I've seen people without aforementioned document say that they are married. The notion that one group of people can own these definitions or concepts is part of the whole problem.
If they are making a point, rather than just being cute, I suspect the point is that they just don't give a hoot about the whims of bigots. If that's the case, I completely agree. Bigots have held people's freedoms hostage for long enough.
Now let us gather around a campfire and sing Kumbaya!
I'm up for Kumbaya and campfires with anyone.
It just seems that the timing is a little suspect as to their motives.
While I agree that capitalism finds a way to exploit everything for a profit, I don't have a problem with this ad. (Gay marriage is illegal in my state as well.) The battle going on right now is a civil rights issue. It's not a radical idea, but rather one that we should feel embarrassed how long it has taken us to fix. Vice President Biden made a good point when he said that the television show Will and Grace did more for gay rights than any politician could. The only way to shake people out of their prejudice is to expose them to the thing they think they fear. Kids growing up today have a much more realistic picture of homosexuality because it's portrayed as something normal in the media they see every day. So, I say good for Amazon. They may have just been trying to make a profit, but in so doing, they acknowledged that the LGBT community is the same as the rest of us; red blooded Americans who might enjoy a kindle.
