Do you feel that the Chain Gang should be brought back for those in prison ?

South Carolina is considering bringing back the Chain Gang for prisoners.  It is said that those in prison have it too easy.  The prisoners are allowed 3 meals a day, to play games and to watch TV, while not contributing to Society.  What do you think prisoners should do, be required to do or not allowed to do?

That's just one thing they should be doing.  There are countless forms of manual labor that prisoners could be forced to do.  This generally wouldn't apply for the highest risk super max security inmates.  They require too much monitoring to be working anywhere near the public.  But for many inmates it's a great idea.   And there is an upside for them as well.  There are many jobs they could be doing where they'll develop some actual skills that might serve them well in the marketplace once they are released back into society.  Whereas today they circulate in general population, lift weights and get in trouble. Then they get released and end up right back in jail because they did nothing to improve themselves while in custody.

Mention chain-gang and I imagine most people would picture long days doing hard labor while being watched by a guy with a beat-stick who whacks anyone who starts to slow down.

Realistically that sort of thing just won't ever happen. At most we'd probably have 8 hours of moderate labor with a lunch and two breaks. Most of us just call that Monday to Friday.

Without that ability to inflict actual physical punishment (which I wouldn't condone anyway) it just doesn't seem like it would be a worse deal than sitting around prison all day. I've never been near a prison, but I think it would be preferable.

Fiscally it may not make much sense either. Big prison costs are security, facilities, and healthcare. Chain gangs would increase costs of security and transportation and maybe even healthcare. Theoretically, the work they do might have economic value, it might also take away jobs from, or put downward pressure on, the wages of the general population. In which case it'd be a wash.

Prisons always represent a negative cost. The best solution is to have no need for them.

Anyone who thinks that prisoners have it easy has no idea of what prison is.  It is a dangerous place where suicides and murders occur regularly. Guards arbitrarily exercise rules, often vengefully.  Men are stripped naked for body searches and  stripped naked twice a year and have to drag all their belongings a long distance to be searched for contraband. These are called lockdowns, and for roughly a month prisoners are confined to their cells and given nothing but baloney or peanut butter sandwiches for a month, maybe a boiled egg.  They almost never eat fresh fruit or fresh vegetables.    Despite claims to the contrary, people are left to die when begging for medical treatment.
To be a prisoner is to live without rights and dignity.

Anyone who thinks prisoners have it easy should go live the easy life for a while.
A poll of US judges said they estimate that 13% of those convicted are innocent.  The figure I have read for America's incarcerated  is 2.8 million (more than all of Europe together, exluding England, more than China, more than any other country...that's our way of dealing with social problems).  Even if the unjustly incarcerated is 10%, that's 280,000 innocent people locked up.

And the separation from loved ones for a lifetime is horrible.

Paul reminds us in the Bible "to remember those in chains as bound with them".  I have to pray for those who are locked up whether innocently or guilty. See we only have one Judge truly. If people are guilty of crimes by all means a just punishment. But it is never right to treat a human being like an animal. For regardless they have been someone's child at some point. We know the downfall of man and how many get to prison.
Chain Gang only something the south invented mostly for the minorities as a form of humiliation during the early 20th century. NAME THAT STATE AGAIN...

No but I do think the death penalty should be brought back now, depending on the crime.

Sex offenders or anyone that was accused of sex crimes should be facing death penalties. Unless they repent, they have no need in society.

I think everyone agrees that anything to do with children crimes is just a twisted soul or more.
