   No, it's not acceptable at all. There is absolutely no good reason to have to text someone while you are driving. It is sheer stupidity that has hurt/killed many people.

   No. Nor do I talk on my cell phone while driving. It drives me crazy to be behind a driver who is texting. Some are so bad, they are weaving and look like an impaired driver. This is truly dangerous and should be illegal in all 50 states.

      Agreed 100%, JThomp42! I believe the accident/death statistics prove what you said, too, "...they are weaving and look like an impaired driver". They don't think about it until after they've killed someone, I guess. Horrible, but sadly realistic.

   Yes. I text while driving while balancing my elbows on the steering wheel so I can see the road and the phone. Luckily, I can text without looking at my phone most of the time. But no, I rarely text at red lights. It might upset the drivers behind me.

      No accidents while texting yet. And corners, you can't text while turning or changing lanes. You have to be insane to do that.

      I had a tyre blow out while driving about six months ago. Glad I wasn't trying to control the steering wheel with my elbows. If I had been, I'd be dead.
      
      I don't text while driving. It's not hard to pull over to the side of the road to text.

      LBurmaster, PLEASE stop texting and driving! What if you killed or crippled someone--a family or baby--because of texting? Find a safer way/time to talk, please, for everyone's sake! Use alternatives--follow Tusitala Tom's great car-mobile rules!

   I always have my phone sitting in the seat beside me if nobody is riding with me. I either have it on silent or vibrate (sometimes the vibration is to quiet for me to hear). Sometimes at red lights, I will sneak a peek at it and if I have a text I will ignore. If I have a call from somebody important to me, I may or may not take a few seconds to put my Bluetooth in.

   I confess, I did just once text, "I'm on my way", while parked at a known-extra-long stoplight near my house that had just turned red in front of me. Otherwise, NEVER. And I regret doing it that one time, too: I think it's wrong and dangerous!
   
   I don't even talk on the phone while driving, hands-free or otherwise.
   
   I know I'm just not talented enough for these things and I've read some of the horrifying crash statistics.
   
   Chewing gum, or singing, is about the extent of my distractions while driving.

      P.S. And also avoiding the other talkers, texters, drunks, and elderly veering all over at random speeds. More than distracting, it's highly dangerous, unnecessary, negligent, and too often deadly. How would they feel if they killed/crippled someone?

   Nope. I always believe in safety when comes to driving. I equip myself with ear piece in case someone calls rather than holding it on my hand to answer. It will be a bad idea to do texting while driving as it distracts your attention on the road.

    No, I don't have a texting feature on my cell phone. It seems unnecessary. I can email or make a phone call. Texting just seems silly to me...so no I have never texted while driving.

    I turn my cell phone - called a mobile phone in Australia - off when I get into my car.   That way I'm not tempted by an incoming call.  And as far as outgoing calls...well, I keep the phone with me in case I need to call someone when I reach my destination or in case of accident or breakdown.
    
    Statisics out here in Aussie show that it's more dangerous to drive whilst using a phone than it is to drive above the maximum allowed blood alcohol level.  Using a phone, even if only talking on it, let alone texting, is down right dangerous!

       I'm 99% sure USA statistics agree, Tusitala Tom. It's illegal to text for some/all drivers in some states, but should be in all. It's really bad, sad, and more preventable than drunk driving (impaired judgment). You could kill someone! Unforgivable!

    I never text and drive. Since when did everyone become so self absorbed and important that it is essential to text someone back immediately? I can't even count the times I've had to swerve to avoid being hit by a driver texting. Drivers that text while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle are deadly and inconsiderate of the safety of every other person around them.
    
    I'm pleased that New York State is really cracking down on drivers that text. For offenses committed on or after June 1, 2013, this violation carries five driver violation points and fines.

    No, I never even text when I'm not driving.
    I've never used my cell phone while driving. I rarely even use it at all. I carry it, turned off, only because I might need it for an emergency. In fact, I'm thinking of cancelling my account.
