Is true and lasting success measured best by
1. selfless visionary thinking (as in the case of Nikola Tesla)
or
2. commercially gainful influence over popular opinion? (as in the case of Oprah Winfrey)
In today's world, we seem to focus on #2. Yet I believe true success is measured by the things which the selfless individuals are known for. Sure, some of those people saw the amount of money they could make from something such as an invention or writing a book. Yet at the same time, even if most of them knew they couldn't make a dime, I bet they would've continued on their path because they knew they could provide something everyone could use - a light bulb, a cure for a disease, etc. We might not always remember their names or what they created and they may have felt like failures at some point, but they were successful. If what they create lasts, then that is a lasting success.
We measure success, in ourselves and others, according to those goals we deem most worthy of attaining. By that standard, Oprah might be considered by many more successful.
But then again, often it's not until we achieve our goals that we discover whether they were worth the price paid.
