Is money the root of all evil or is a real or perceived lack of it a common cause of ill deeds?
I'd say neither. I'd say desire over money is the root of all evil if you want to go down this route of thought, but realistically there is no simple answer as to the route of all evil. As evil is ambiguous a concept and it has existed with and without money.
To begin with you have misquoted 1 Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." which makes sense ...your statement does not make sense as money itself is an inanimate object. Inanimate objects do not have the capacity to cause evil in and of themselves.
Lack of money, an inanimate object, cannot cause ill deeds either.
Evil or ill deeds cannot be caused by inanimate objects or the lack thereof but evil and ill deeds are only the result of decisions made by people that are lacking in morality. It is people's attitude (determined by their morality) toward money that causes evil, not the money or lack of it.
I think greed and opportunity cause people to use money or get money in ways that can be described as evil. I agree with the second part of your statement that the lack of it causes ill deeds. By the way, the biblical verse about money actually states that "the love of money is the root of all evil." Money itself is not a bad thing. It's the way we worship it and use it that gets us in trouble.

To answer that, do we need a definition of 'evil' before we can determine its root cause. For many a devil is the root cause, for others, ignorance, for others, what they do not possess and others do, is an evil. What is evil?
It's not money that's the root of all evil - it's people that are the root of evil. Money is merely a symbol, a means of exchange of labour which can be used to purchase goods. The currency notes usually state that the national bank promises to pay the bearer the amount stated on the note.
But some people are greedy or envious of the fortunes of others, and this might cause them to commit evil deeds. Perhaps in a world of equality there would be less evil, but there will always be people who want more than their fair share.
The phrase "money is the root of all evil" is not found anywhere in The Bible. The actually phrase is "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.
Money is a good thing until you place it at a higher priority than you family, you God, or anything else that is more important.
This is commonly misquoted. It is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil. Not the money itself.
If you look more closely at the "love" of money, you'll see the real culprit -- Ego.
Ego is the separate self. This is the "perception of nakedness" in the Garden (guilt).
The love of money is driven by self-concern (ego). Ego (selfishness) is the source of all suffering and thus all evil.
Christ said that those who are First (egoistic) shall be last, and that those who are Last (humble and loving of others) shall be first.
We need to be loving of others as ourselves and to wish for them everything that they desire. When we find this True Love, then love is directed properly -- not toward the self-concern that money seems to satisfy.

Is money the root of (almost) all evil? You might say it is religion but many of these people have aprice for their silence, you may say it is jelousy but surely this is mainly down to monetary assets?

Should Christian’s have wealth, and if so should they flaunt it?
