Here in the UK if a politician is speaking in the House of Commons for example they have to get their facts right or face a ruling from the Speaker. In extreme circumstances they can get banned but this is a rare occurrence.
Politicians are always distorting facts, or else using different sources for their facts to back up their arguments. They're very clever. Rarely do you hear apologies for inaccuracies but there should be something apart from the normal legalities involved should they overstep the mark.
