Are you aware that there are places pretending to be the IRS calling people to defraud them somehow?

This happened to my brother-in-law just a few days ago who has a mental handicap. He told us of the calls which he didn't understand being on a disability of course and we did a search on their number and there were other people they have called and since they are already being got after we have done nothing but tell the brother-in-law to hang up and not speak to them. I just wondered if this is happening to others? I wonder too; what they want and how they hope to achieve it? Any ideas?
