   Why do people sign up to the army? What could they justify killing people with?
   
   Why would anyone want to kill other people? Unless of course they actually believe that there are people out there who deserve to die? How can they be sure that the people they kill deserve to die?

   I don't think most people join the army with the main intention of killing someone - but killing may just happen when you are faced with the duty of having to defend and protect your country.

   They're not in it for killing people.  They see it as protecting their country and the people in it from those who would harm it.  Freedom comes at a price, yes, it should be free, but we had to fight for our freedom from England in the 1700's.  Time and time again there will be threats to that freedom, and we have to fight or be taken over and subject to another country's rule.  In the past, civilizations that were taken over had the people in them made slaves or killed.  Who wants that?  So no, people don't sign up in the army because they like to kill others or think they deserve to die.  Unfortunately, this world is not at peace, and there will always be sick people who think WE deserve to die, and unless we want that to happen, and let those sick people take over the world, we've got to stop them with force when talking it out does not help.  In addition, where there is war, there will be innocent casualties and collateral damage.  I don't see how that can be prevented 100%, but the US army does whatever it can to avoid it.

   Annabella, I totally understand your question. I think that a citizen has a duty to protect their country once of age. This is like a universal rule of earth. The people who volunteer, do it with many things on their minds. One would be "my country is in imminent danger and I will die protecting it". When they sign up, yes they probably think that they will get to kill someone and that this someone deserves to die. How do they know that this someone deserves to die? Their government officials tell them who to kill and when. This is a huge problem but one I don't see a solution to. We elect presidents and expect them to work for the people, to be truthful, to be kind and understanding. We don't expect them to have a secret agenda that holds personal gain. Look at George W Bush presidency. Look at all of the stuff that is written about his lies to purposely start a war in Iraq. (speculations and conspiracy theories?) Look at how many innocent civilians died and soldiers that went in thinking that Iraq had to pay for 911. Now, everything I just said has not been confirmed nor denied but when veterans who survived start coming home and talking, it makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew. What makes this theory stop a president in the future, causing problems and inciting war with other countries for political and personal gain? The people that suffer the most are the civilians and then the soldiers who come home with long term problems or don't come home at all. The people that benefit most? Those are the men and women we elected, thinking this was in our best interest... They don't lift a finger, only sit with their heads up high, ordering the killings of many. Solution? I have no idea!

      Good point about the Bush administrations lies to start an invasion of Iraq.  However, the people in the military were just following orders and did so out of false pretenses.  The question was why do people sign up for the army.

      They couldn't be sure that the people they killed deserved it.  I think it was in the Vietnam War (or maybe the WW's) that they had a saying: "When in doubt, shoot them all, let God sort them out."  In war, kill or be killed.

   One way of looking at this is with Purity of Intent; Sincerity of Purpose. God is in your Heart and already knows your intentions. If an invader attacks your country and you are called upon to defend your family, what would you do?
   
   A soldier was once brought before a Sikh Guru who was on a battlefield.
   
   "He was found tending the wounds of the enemy." They sad proudly. But the Guru simply responded:
   
   "This man understands my philosophy." And, after giving him gold and jewellery, sent him away.
   
   God already knows our intentions, and motive, or purity of intention is everything!

   To answer the first question, most people don't. As to the justification of those who do, it's typically out of self interest. Military service is a quick way to move up in life if one knows what they're doing.

   The right to life includes the right to defend your life from those who would take it.
   When a member of ISIS shows up with Allah's permission to murder those who will not convert and rape the girls he captures, it is the soldier who kills him before he kills the innocents that is in the right. Refusing to defend your family from that horror is actually immoral.
   The Bible does not say do not kill, it says do not murder. Killing people during war to prevent the rape, murder and pillaging of your people IS morally acceptable.
