The Terrorist was allowed to purchase firearms AND pass a background check allowing him to become a Security Guard, even though he was interviewed three times by the FBI in 2013 and 2014 following separate reports of extremist behavior and connections to terrorism, and having relations with known terrorists that had traveled back and forth from Afghanistan and Syria to America.
These are the facts, it is not that he could access a weapon that caused this tragedy; not having access to weapons did not stop the terrorists who bombed the Boston Marathon, nor did it hinder the terrorists on 9/11.
But the fact that he was a known terrorist sympathizer, who then went and purchased multiple firearms, should have sent up flags to the FBI, NSA and others.
Allowing known terrorist sympathizers and supporters to purchase weapons while still potentially having connections to terrorists is a flaw in our system. Not identifying our enemies for what they are, and labeling them as such, is a flaw in our system.
Perhaps if we lived in a society that praised law abiding citizens for protecting themselves, and stopping such terrorists, rather than treating people who defend their lives, and the lives of others, as criminals... Perhaps if our society made responsible citizens feel it was a duty and responsibility to carry a firearm to be able to stop such terror, rather than making it a public stigma for having anything to do with weapons, we would live in a safer world where acts like this were stopped before dozens or even hundreds are killed in such acts of violence.
