I think as a society we have definitely become more self-centered. The number of "reality" shows on television help bear this out. There used to be a time when if you desired to be a star at a particular craft (music, acting, comedy, etc.) you took classes, practiced and honed your craft. Now you become a "star" by merely getting on a reality show and having cameras follow you around while you do mundanely idioitc things or compete with a bunch of attention starved people for a prize. Also social networks like Twitter, where people literally feel a need to let people know where they are in real time 24 hrs a day are a testament to the constant need to be validated by relentlessly drawing attention to yourself.
