How can the U.S. heal its political divides?

We're increasingly in a tribal mentality of red vs. blue. As a libertarian, I'm concerned that people are not able to get along or do what's best for the country anymore; they want two dramatically opposed visions for the future of the country and do not seem willing to make compromises for stability and peace. People are beating up Donald Trump supporters. While it seems that the nation is moving forward on issues we all tend to agree on, like marijuana and gay marriage, other things like feminism and BLM cause hatred and turmoil. Can society recover from all this nasty tribalism?

It would take time to bridge the divide, about 10 years after We the people realize the Problems are caused by local state and federal law makers. I don't know how long it will take for we the people to realize that Laws and the lack of laws and regulations transcends race and ethic grouping in there affect on all Americans regardless of race and their economics. Americans must replace extreme Conservatives and extreme liberals with moderates that want to make laws and regulations that applies to all the people and regulate the corporations and capitalism to benefit the poor and needed. Jobs would will really help at this time in the US and the GOP has been promising jobs for people since the 2010 mid-term elections.  Too much time is being wasted it don't look good, but, who knows...

unfortunately, gay marriage and marijuana WILL become issues again with sessions as ag. and then, back to outlawing abortion and more racial profiling. the new labor nominee has been sued for sexual harrassment, doesnt believe workers need better pay, and the nominees for environmental issues dont believe in global warming. exxon man as sos...when his company worked against us interests....moving embassy to jerusalem, knowing it will fire off a powder keg...this is what is dividing! our whole values and belief systems are in 360% opposite direction.
and its a little late, and frankly unfair to expect those on the liberal side to play nice, when its been 8 years of beating us down in any way possible.
    want to get along? apoligize.

Yes attitudes like yours do seemingly cause a divide of opinions. But that is not a divide in our country. We have to have at least to positions (dem-Rep) I disagree but respect your opinion and I did not beat you down.

I am very interested in such discussions. I have three older children that live throughout United States. I was lucky to visit them all this last fall. Wow! each of their neighborhoods from San Fran to DC were awesome. Great places for a walk. Friendly people and peaceful. Ethnicities were off the charts everywhere. But none quite like my near border neighborhood. On my block you cannot go three houses in any direction and find three of the same race. My child's school is fantastic. They deal with 11 ESL languages and incorporate and immerse severely disabled kids into mainstream. In the School Site Council that I chair out of eight we have four ethnicities. There is money for all necessities and some extras.
Now we have some gang violence, read that criminals. I am sure there is some domestic abuse. Which is horrible. But there is no violence from one neighbor to another. The local markets are filled with public banter and opines on the latest hot news topics. But I cannot remember the last time I saw what looked like hate in my area.
In short, I believe this "great divide" is a bunch of hyped up BS. Peace don't sell news commercials. These fringe radicals that get all the news cycles are such a tiny reflection of America, just tiny like 0.1%. If you look even the race riotous behavior are all in huge crime areas. Those are not advocates you see on the news they are criminals taking advantage. There is a real anti-social issue with many of the criminal social media freaks that would beat someone and and stream it. That is so danged rare in a country of over 300 million souls. Do not mistake criminals as normal people. God hope there is a huge divide between criminals and law abiding people. But don't go stereo typing because of those freaks of nature.
In my state you are free to be as liberal as you want or as conservative as you want and all our children and adults play with each other just fine.
With all that said, we still need a whole lot more love and compassion. Which is not to say there is plenty out there that we do not hear about.

Whether the great divide is fabricated or a hoax, doesn't change the fact that the Great Divide really exists. Saying that the great divide is not real goes to its creation, not to its veracity. The great divide is no more not existent than the huge and continuing Void between Democrats and Republicans in congress. The reality of this void is found in the congressional gridlock, and failure of the country in the last several decades from moving forward, being prosperous, and centered.

You can't judge the quality of life across the country by viewing a very small slice from a pinpoint. The American people cannot be sliced like a ham, because the people, the cities, towns and states have different ingredients.

You want to see the true America going across the country from little, towns all the way up to the dense urban areas. Watch the Los Angels news and with 10 million people the majority of the news is death, injury, destruction and chaos.
There are 2 million people in our jails and prisons, I believe that is the most in the world. It would be more but the courts keep forcing the release of many of them because of overcrowding.

It is further exacerbated by trying to bring in millions of immigrants that really don't want to assimilate into America but want us to be their surrogate country, like home away from home.

The government cannot and should not try to make social issues into laws. The next thing we will find ourselves following laws of other countries or even religions. The first amendment didn't go far enough in stating that the government cannot be a religion. It should be interpreted that there is freedom to worship your religion, but not to enforce it on America or its citizens.

Right now the Great Divide is real and it is Democrat versus Republican, and not only have the loyalty party voters gone Hatfield and McCoy, but the MSM is now a third major party supporting the left, somewhat like the Tea Party and the Republicans.

Things like BLM, riots against Trump supporters, Muslim Immigrants, and other attacks are really the weapons used to keep this divide an ever increasing void.

The attack is both on the loyal party voters, and manipulating them in the cause of their divide. They are like a robot army attacking the once United States of America. The divide is real, even though it is caused by social reengineering of America thru subliminal but calculated misdirection. It works similar to Pearl Hrbr and 911.

We cannot work toward moderate common solutions until liberals abandon their branding that they and only they are love, peace, tolerance, rational, educated while everyone with a different view is stupid, evil, phobic, crazy, uneducated (with the presumption everyone good and smart will convert when told the liberal doctrine).
When liberals deny that conservatives have rational points of view and legitimate grievances, there cannot be discussion, much less "healing".
That's how we had Trump elected, because someone talking about illegal immigrants depressing American wages gets called racist, trying to discuss Muslim migrant terrorist attacks (OSU, San Bernadino, Boston Bombers) is called Islamophobic, addressing FGM and honor killings by Muslims gets you called racist, discussing the link of black crime with the breakdown the family (back to racist) ...
To quote Dr. Jordan Peterson, when you cannot talk, all you have left is violence. Liberals systematically orchestrated censorship from the news media to social media to routine name calling in private conversations and upped the ante to violence at events because they believed their branding, that they are good so they must silence the evil haters. With an election, we had a mostly peaceful transfer of power except for the violent fascists who have permission per their own ideology to "fight evil", conservatives.
Until true liberals rein in and denounce the violent authoritarian liberals in their midst, they have no more credibility than the moderate Muslims who can't condemn Muslim fundamentalist terrorists and refuse to report them to the police. By their silent compliance or tacit support, they show they agree with the acts of the violent minority.

It's not as simple as Blue vs. Red: People are no longer assimilating as Americans, but as the culture they came from or perceive that they came from. We call ourselves Mexican Americans, African Americans, Muslim Americans, European Americans and so on. We are dividing into groups that pit their race and cultures against those of others. We could heal, but the greater question is if all of these groups prefer to segregate, or become non-hyphenated Americans. Jury is out on this question and it's not clear when or if it will ever convene.
So the answer is yes we can, but maybe we won't.

First we need to get rid of the electoral college, it served a purpose at one point in our history when communication and travel between the first colonies was slow and uncertain with long distances between those allowed to vote but that purpose as long since passed. The we need to fire absolutely everyone in Congress and Senate. We in essence hire our government to govern when we vote for them, if they are not doing so we do have a right to fire them like any employer. We need to hire all new representatives of the people and impose term limits for EVERY government seat, we don't have a President for 40 years so why should we have a senator for so long? Interestingly enough polls show that many senators only have about a 10% approval rating most of the time yet people reelect them 90% of the time. That needs to change. All of us need to send a message that we are tired of it by choosing someone completely new next time an election comes up in your states. Out with the Old!

Unfortunately so many American's have gotten into a mind set that they can't change anything so they don't even try, others are so use to a broken system that they complain, say "this is the way it is" and don't movie to do anything about it and a few handfuls are not enough to cause the widespread change we are desperately in need of.

How does that work when Ca has over 10% of the population and it is only 2% of the country. That is what the Electoral College was created to do. Trump won the majority of US counties, is more representative of popularity than CA tipping vote

Leslie I really get your point. But I am from AZ originally. If we went straight popular AZ would be fully ruled by other states and the feds. I do not want to be dictated to by LA and NY I do not think like they think. States rights vs. Fed rights??

    NO!  "We" can't!
Genesis 1:26;28 says "God gave "dominion" of EVERYTHING on earth to man" and look what he's done with it!

America was "built" on "LIES!"  How can a company, a family, an organization or an entity of ANY kind which was not built on a solid foundation succeed?

Keep calling me a "fool," but man has tried EVERYTHING humanly possible or imagined to "heal the nation," with the exception of God!  Hocus Pocus BS huh?

Let me tell you something AGAIN!  One's spirit is stronger than ANY physical capability a man has!  It's been proven!  Have you seen the child on YouTube bending a spoon with her mind?  We need to enhance our spiritual capabilities with positive training from God!  We were not "farted from stars" but created by the Creator who is Spirit!  We were created in "That" image; "spirit!"

Since He is our Creator, we need to learn "how" to and "what" pleases Him to become "in His likeness!"  If we are His children, we have the same capabilities He does!  However, we must learn the "recipe" given in His Word to function as He does!

It's just like any light company; the source (spirit or electricity) is there but one must learn to "turn on the switch" (The "recipe" or "commandments" in His Word) in order to activate light!  Why would Jesus say "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can move mountains" (Matthew 17:20) if what I'm saying is not true?  Can one man physically "move a mountain?"

Imagine what one man would be able to do if we learned how to become the "god" Scripture says we are (Psalms 82:6)!  Why would Jesus say "He that BELIEVES in Me, greater things than these shall ye do" (John 14:12)?  Greater things than Jesus?  Therefore, look how IGNORANT man is running around like a chicken with his head cut off "trying to figure out" what he can do to "heal the nation" when the answer is right under his nose!  JESUS!

America "was" built on LIES and as with a ponzi scheme; the end is total destruction! We can't fix it America because any entity built on "sand" (aka LIES) and not on a solid foundation (TRUTH aka GOD aka WORD) will FAIL!

You "think" the Bible is LIES?  I can guarantee you one thing; It has the "recipe" to "connect" to THE SPIRIT from which we all came and from which we WILL return!

GROW UP AMERICA!  Stop sitting around talking about "trivia" and learn to use what God has given you and you have already proven; It's not your "brain!"

    Blessings

there is no way to heal until the leaders of the country stop pointing the finger. stop with the "you  versus me" or " us versus them". you versus her, him against her and so on and so forth.
it is okay to be separate and proud. there is no shame in this. we run into trouble when we blame our troubles or woes on another segment of society.
do not say you are poor because of him (someone different from you). you have no job because of her (someone who doesnt live where you do). there is no or food because of them and so on. this makes some people think if they sit or stand on top of another person or group in society they will stand taller . trump is telling folks this mantra. that being said, everyone will always be separate, under someone or over them. he enjoys the chaos.
be careful with this type of separatism. this is generally how bills get passed into laws that no one would ever approve. its like a magic trick. while everyone is focused on marijuana or BLM another Patriot Act is passed.
no one will take responsibility or share. sorry to say it but the tone and mood of his inauguration today is what we have to look forward to

I believe part of the answer begins with us.  We need to once again be a nation that has some manners.  We need to speak and write respectfully to one another and discuss our views without hostility and name calling, which is all to common today.

Welcome dissenting opinions from your own as we can all learn from one another.  Listen more to what the other side has to say.  I have at times wanted to "unfriend" people with political views that I have found offensive but instead, I try to learn from them.  Why do you believe what you believe?  What facts can you show that support what you believe?  How does this issue affect you or your loved ones?

Most of all, we all need to embrace one another as brothers and sisters.  Gay or Straight, Black or White,  Christian, Jew or Muslim, Foreign born or born in the USA, we are all in this together.  I must love you, not try to  change you.  We all need to love one another!

You go Pat!  LOVE is the key!  TRUTH is LOVE!  The ONE THING you missed is GOD who is [REAL] LOVE!  The foundation of EVERYTHING that will "heal the nation!"  Unfortunately, MOST "think" HE'S a joke but is the ONLY THING that will "heal America!"
