Can be the India's surging 'middle class' really called 'middle class'? Yes or No

I visited the new India's middle class neighbourhood, their inhabitants showed me proudly their spotless floors in their shubby slums, few gleaming pots and clean school uniforms hanging on shabby walls...they are happy that they make it, they have basic food, shelters over their head and means to send their children to school at least at primary level. I felt so proud of them and happy they through their hard labour and persistence they managed to step up to 'middle class?'
