Practically speaking each of us can only be intimately involved one on one with a very limited number of people.
Politically speaking we may be thinking altruistically that everyone deserves to live on some minumum scale even if we can't agree on the level necessary for life to be livable.
This kind of thinking may be what some of us think of when we think of socialism. Each according to their ability makes sense to me.Each according to their need is charity and not something earned.Charity is a personal choice ,not a requirement. It may be morally the right thing to do if you have the means to do it.
Others on the political spectrum think socialism means giving everyone what they "want" much like a spoiled child gets from their parents who can or canot afford it.Credit cards allow this to some extent.
People may or may not realize that we are all dependant on each other to some extent. Many think that they are independent of everyone else. This may be true of a very limited number of people who live on an Island or in an area that's no easily accessable to others such as mountain retreats deserts or a castle with a moat around it.
