I say yes. Although Americans are pretty ignorant, they are not stupid. We are capable of knowing whether or not a decision will affect our personal freedoms. And that is generally what we worry about as citizens. When we shrug and say we are not wise enough to influence decisions in Washington, we are giving our paternalistic government carte blanche to create an Orwellian society. Was George W Bush wise enough to make decisions? He was our president after all. What if Sara Palin became Chief of State? Is she less-ignorant than the average American? Our richest and most powerful rulers are subjects of the same flawed educational system we are. Some learn how to understand the world, but most do not. They are more like movie stars than statesmen. I would go a step further and say abolish the House of Representatives in lieu of a national referendum on all issues: public spending, going to war, passing laws, etc. Why not?
