Female foeticide: Heinous Crime Against Women
The term female foeticide means killing the female fetus in the womb. How cruel? The practice has been followed in India for ages, a country that once described its women as godessess. For this reason, Indian women will soon get extinct. Surprised? The most active part is being played by women themselves -- why? Just for the mere want of a boy, mothers don't feel pain in strangulating their daughters in their wombs. Can anyone be more cruel?
In India, sex ratio stands at a paltry 933:1000, i.e., 67 women short of every 1,000 males. Can you imagine how bad the situation is -- in the coming times, the boys of this country will have to remain single because there will be no girls for them to marry.
Ever thought why mothers are being forced to kill their daughters even before they are born? How can mothers be so cruel to their own daughters - their own shadows? As far as I can think, the main reason behind this gruesome scenario is society - where girls are not treated equal, where girls are looked down upon, and where parents of the girl child have to pay dowry to get their daughters married of.
When a girl takes birth, parents have to bear the burden of bringing her up. Then, in today's scenario, girls have to be provided education, so the burden of educating someone who will leave the parents' house for her husband's place is too much. The mere thought of this sends a few parents shivering. Some parents feel they are wasting their precious resources on someone who will not remain their own. Besides, another reason for female foeticide is that protecting and safeguarding the girl child has become an uphill task for families, as the crime rate against women is on the rise. How bad? For this reason,a few parents debar their daughters from going outside and they have to stay home away from the rest of the world.
Women are subjected to cruelty from the male section of this so-called advanced society. Even educated women face such treatment, what to talk about uneducated, illiterate women. Then last but not the least, the bride price or dowry is a factor which is the prime killer of many girls after marriage. The greed for getting more money and resources from the girl's family pushes the in-laws of many girls towards killing them. How sad! Few are forced to end their lives themselves.
There are frequent incidents of acid attacks, rape, molestation and discrimination against girls. These are a few reasons that force most parents to treat their daughters, born or unborn, as a burden. So by killing their unborn daughters in the womb, such parents try to get rid of the burden of raising a girl child.
Sex Determination Tests
These days sex determination procedure has proved a bane for the girl child. Law forbids sex determination tests; however, despite this, they continue to have their hold in India. Many doctors illicitly collaborate with parents of the girl child to abort the fetus after determining its sex. How cruel?
What Can We Do
Today, it is the responsibility of the educated generation to stir a revolution for saving the girl child. We need to educate those educated as well as uneducated ignorant people who commit such heinous crimes as female infanticide. Raising awareness about this issue will certainly help. Every person can play a part in making others aware of this cruelty, which is a crime. Some villages in India have no girls - boys are unable to find a life partner, merely because unborn girl children in those villages were killed in the womb years ago. The statistics are only rising.
It is the duty of every responsible citizen of this country to raise awareness about the issue of female foeticide.
- Television can play a big role in awakening and propagating this message by broadcasting programs concerning the issue.
- Even advertisements in this regard can play a big role in changing the mind-set of people against female foeticide.
- Movies, theater plays can be created focusing on women and girl child.
- Government campaigns in the most vulnerable parts would also bring a change.
- Strict legal action against the culprit parents, doctors, and relatives will set a precedent.
My own story as a girl
I am a girl myself, who is surviving today because my parents did not kill me in the womb. They allowed me to enjoy my pre-natal life, take birth in this world, revel in my childhood, experience all the luxuries of life, study in a top school and leading university in the state, venture out to the Indian capital for further my academic record, choose my own career, and marry with a boy of my choice. Yes, I had all these luxuries and liberties. But are all Indian girls as lucky? Alas, they are not. Therefore, I pay gratitude to my parents for helping me stand on my feet and live the life I had always cherished, seeing the dreams I always wanted to realize.
Had my parents, too, killed me as an unborn child like many other parents, would you be reading this hub?
Was I not allowed to take birth, would I have been able to see this world full of beauty as well as beasts.
If this heinous practice of female foeticide continues unabated, it will be a welcome invitation to gay culture. Are we ready for that? I don't think, a country like India will ever accept the same. We are already starting to see glimpses of the advent of gay culture in India.
This is my earnest request to all those who consider daughters a burden to let their girls come in this world. Remember, a daughter is yours for life, a son is yours until wife.
So, my dear friends, especially Indians and all those would-be parents, do not nip the bud of baby girls in the womb, do not snatch away the right of taking birth from your daughter. She deserves to see this world as much as your son. May be she will be the one who will change your life for the better. On the other side, if girls are continued to be killed in the womb, your sons or the Gen-X boys will not get brides. If you do not want such a scenario to take place, kindly ignite the love for daughters in this world and make it more beautiful!!!!!!
Save the girl child - save this world!
