Romney's trip oversees

I believe his trip is an effort to increase his foreign experience but it had me wonder about something else.

Does anyone recall the last time a presidential candidate went on an oversees trip, meeting with officials from other countries, when they didn't hold a current political position here in the US?

I don't think there is anything wrong with it but it just struck me as out of the ordinary.  He is basically just a citizen on vacation meeting with these officials.

Can anyone recall when the last time this happened?

Obama was a senator, Romney holds no such position.

I think most front runners in recent years have gone on a tour before the election. They don't usually manage to insult their host countries though.

I agree but how many didn't hold a political office at the time of the tour?  That is what has me wondering.
