In light of a current topic that is getting posted to like mad I realized just how much I like this site. Yes you get trolls or whatever you wanna call em that rile up peoples blood. Thing is our trolls are not actually all that bad, they are cuddly trolls!
Here in the UK they have this political thing saying, whatever, it goes-
Hug a hoodie
Maybe we should think to
Hug a troll
Just an idea because I think this site is full of totally amazing people and these hot topics do not seem to totally unravel into a mud slinging match with hurt feelings and everything.
Just like with anything else there are people who absolutely know, don't think, know what Truth is. What I love about this site is that with all the varieties of people, you can't help but question what you think you know. Well at least the non-trolls do.
Still it surprises me how much you can disagree with someone and still have civil conversations with them. Personally I've met several great people like that.
Thats exactly what I mean. I wish we could teach the politicians how to do that! It would be a much better world if people were like they are here, its refreshing to see .
I'd have to agree there. The reality is that these issues that divide us are only as strong as we make them. In real-life, most people want the same things - we just get caught up in the semantics over how to achieve them. This has been a great place to discuss/debate/laugh about issues with intelligent and interesting people from around the world.
Absolutely. I think this site is great for a healthy respectful debate. I've never discussed politics online before. It is really interesting around here. I do greatly wish that the disrespectful, non-related comments from both sides would desist, but that occurs in any political forum, online or off. It would certainly be a lot more enjoyable without all of that stuff.
People so often say that those who tend to be near the center (between far left and far right) are "wishy washy" and won't take a stand. In reality, people who hover somewhere within the vicinity of the center often have more balanced views.
I like the good, honest, debate by people who are reasonable. Also, though, I even like the occasional interruptions to "legitimate" conversation with those mini-strings of wisecrack exchanges. They're funny and make things interesting.
What I don't go for are the big, blanket, statements like, "All Republicans only want...." or "All women..." or "All young people" (etc. etc.). No matter what group we're in we're all individuals, and anyone who makes those "all-Republicans" type of statements is obviously wrong. Then they'll base a whole, big, long, thing on their "All-whoever" statements; and the whole thread then turns into a bunch of foolishness (and not the funny-wisecrack kind).
That is my most frequently experienced obstacle. Just because I'm a Republican, I'm viewed as cold-hearted and narrow-minded. Anyone who knows me would never call me that.
Blanket assumptions are the most challenging obstacle to overcome within the political world. They prevent progress from being made and also blur plausible viewpoints from either side.
