    That red liberty cap or the Phrygian cap.  It is a symbol of freedom and the pursuit of liberty.

    Some people believe that Peyo (Pierre Culliford, the creator of the smurfs) tried to spread communist ideas through his smurf cartoons. Supporters of this theory translate s.m.u.r.f. to be "socialist men under red father" or "soviet men under red father" Papa Smurf being the red father, as he wears his red hat and trousers.

    Papa Smurf gives me the creeps!
