        I went out to the shops and everyone was talking about - seems with it being on Sky news it has shocked everyone. I don't have TV so looked it up when I came back.

        What really gets me is that there were other adults in the room, who did nothing...!

    Lets not forget that this would have been normal treatment in western schools less than 100 years ago, when they too were mainly run by religion.

    I'm not shocked at all. Obviously you didn't go to Catholic school. I suppose by today's standards where you're just about accused of child abuse for giving a time out and where teachers can't touch children even to break up a fight, this might look pretty shocking, but back in the 60s in my elementary school, nobody would have batted an eyelash.
