What is Homogeneous Society

Homogeneous definition-consisting of people or things that are all of the same type.

Referecne: Longman dictionary

A homogeneous society is such a society where most of the people share the same type of cultures values, language, ethnicity and religious system. Recent research has found that archaic Homo sapiens evolved to anatomically modern humans in between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago, then some members of modern humans started to leave Africa by 60,000 years ago into different parts of the world and environment made us ethnically diversed, otherwise in the beginning of human race we all were black people. In that sense black people are our real ancestors, our root. If you closely observe some common behavior of humans you will find that no matter how much culturally and religions divided we are , most of the nationals of the world share same types of human quality(bad and good human natures) and similar types of myths found in many countries. It does not matter if your were born in Latin American or Europe , most of us share the common social values and think almost the same way.what made us almost think alike, of course think alike means about some humans nature.

Types of homogeneous society

Homogeneity comes to a society in a numbers of ways-ethnically(
Japanese), religiously(many Arab nationals), culturally(Indians), politically(communism) etc. Study has shown that the most prominent type of homogeneity is ethnicity, where everybody share similar physiological characteristics and cultural behaviour . Financial homogeneity also exists in many countries. It was prevalent in many communist countries-this type of homogenous society is in decline now-a day. Perhaps North Korea is a great example of financial homogeneity, at extreme level, off course.Another good example is scandinavian countries, where the government make sure that every citizen of their country enjoy high level of living standards. Ethnic homogeneity still strong among many aboriginal groups in USA, Latin countries,China,Japan, South Asia and Africa.

Homogeneous society Examples

Though it is nearly impossible to find a perfect homogeneous society, yet some great example of homogeneous society is Japanese society, Chinese society, and a number of African tribes : Zulu south Africa,Yoruba in Nigeria and Benin, Amhara and Afar in Ethiopia(Afra also live in the areas of Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia in the Horn of Africa), Red Indians or Native Americans in the United States and some more in middle east and south and south-east Asia.

Advantage of Homogeneity

In heterogeneous society language barrier sometimes cause great danger to the unity of the entire society .At the same time diversity of religious and ethnic groups can take destructive path. For instance, after 911 many Indians, Pakistanis and Arabs were threatened or even beaten in many US cities. The reason is not difficult to understand-they all have similar physical appearance. Lack of religious homogeneity ,at times, turn to be very dangerous-India was mostly affected by it due Hindu-Muslim riots. Moreover, a fair political homogeneity in a society can be much more powerful then political heterogeneity in the sense that Govt. decision making would be much easier since it is bound to reflect all the majority people’s point of view.

Main problem with the homogeneous society

History suggests that homogeneity of a nation were threatened and broken many times and it is also not possible to preserve the perfect homogeneousness of a society . For example, during the period of 5300-1940 B.C Sumerian used to live in current day IRAQ, in spite of being politically, socially, and agriculturally advanced they lacked or did not even consider developing their military power which caused them defect in the hands of Akkadians. Perhaps, homogeneous ideology in every aspect of life and society, blind the people living in a homogeneous society about the development of the rest of the world. Every moment our world is advancing and every nation and society contributing toward the development. There is little scope for any society to be conservative about it's culture, political system and technology-I mean in terms of not accepting and adopting the better alien ideas and technology. Not accepting changes is the main problem of the leaders living in homogeneous society, which eventually lead to the fall of the entire society- Japan suffered this type of problem and get backward during the time of Shogun, who believed in the homogeneity of their society. yet, it is still possible to maintain ethnically homogeneity to a great extent- now Japan is an ideal example of it. Nonetheless it can be said that a homogeneous society is fairly stable than any other type of society.

I read this twice: I believe I got your point. I'm not sure, though. I'm one for pointing out our similarities as human beings; you did this too, but seemed to think a homogenous society is better or more advantageous. I don't know about that, I'm American, and we come from all over the world, and there's something very positive, envigorating, refreshing, and mind-expanding about that fact.

Thanks paradise for interesting comment.I agree with you about your comment on heterogeneous society. But homogeneous society is a bit better in terms of social stability such as any racial or religious problems-that's just my opinion based some data.Otherwise,a diverse society is far better than a homogeneous society-kind of a breeding ground of innovation.

Hi, I'm surprised with your comments - defending that homogeneous society model is better than the heterogeneous is for me at least worrying or maybe I didn't understood a thing about your point.

I think you are forgeting some recent episodes in human history in which some tried to create a homogeneous society. There is only one way to do this, because what is natrural is diference, forcing others to accept a model that a state, nation, whatever, sees as the best one.

And that kind of stability you only get by first killing the differences in it. Isn't that a high price for 'stability'?

I have to be honest - I found your ending confusing. I love Japan because it the scope of items it adds diversity. And I would love to visit someday. I don't know IF I would want to live without diversity. I love traveling and seeing the diversity, I love living in the diversity. The distrust of foreigners is sad. I pray that it lessens. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Kelly.I also love Japan and of course they are adding diversity to the world of technology. In the time of Japanese shoguns they were not accepting any foreign technology and that cause the fall of Shoguns dynasty-the main reason is lack of military power, the rest of the world was much ahead of them in terms of military innovation and other technological advancement. As soon as they start to learn and adopt foreign technology they started to flourish their economy. So, my point is that not diversifying technically is a drawback-I mean technical homogeneity is not good for a society.thanks.

Interestingly enough Japan is not actually racially homogenous compared to China or Korea. There were a couple waves of peoples that moved into Japan and there is no doubt that there was a lot of mixing over the generations. But Japan has always liked to show itself as being homogenous and "pure." Even the Japanese Emperor has some Korean blood in his veins . . As with most everything in Japan, appearances deceive . .

Ali- thanks Ali for your wonderful comment.I think both homogeneous and heterogeneous societies are economically viable as long as good governance is concerned.

Well, the Human Family as an entire group species is homogeneous (if we could only just get back to loving each others); & at the same time, totally heterogeneous (even identical twins have some differences). Yes; the future is going to blend us; even more rapidly than in the past. We now can move about to each others, with modern transportation & communication machines.

Thanks erojr1 for stopping by.I also think that as a whole we all are homogeneous, though there are lots of division among us in terms of ethnicity, religion etc.

Wow how we elude the entire responsibility of loving one another. Just because it's plastered indiscriminately over Disney movies, inundated throughout music, and masqueraded as hope for religious organizations across the globe, does not mean it's easy. Love certainly is something to be worked at. It's a process of recognizing differences but FURTHERMORE accepting those difference that make us individuals.

Are we so selfish to use the blessing of sight and color to determine what or who a person is on the inside?

So, am i to believe that because a white man killed my father in hate, that all white people are bad? If that's the history I follow, and allocate my hate to that group i have failed. Why chalk it up to the race and not to "EVIL" itself? YES this world is inherently EVIL we were all born into that cycle, but RACISM and separatism, are products of that evil (surface issues).

So to solve only the surface issue is as to go to the doctor and receive painkillers for the cancer that is killing you. You cannot recover from cancer unless u remove the cancer itself. You can't even take a part of the cancer away, it has to be the whole thing, or it comes right back. Hate is that cancer...

I am Japanese and am writing a hub about ethnic and racial difference from my point of view as a Japanese living in

Canada. Apparently in Japan, there was some "mixing" of the races prior to the 3rd century (not so sure) which involved

Ainu (primarily from Russia)and Chinese who migrated to Japan via a land bridge which later disappeared and made Japan geographically isolated. There was intermarriage amongst this mixed race and there was very little immigration which made Japan ethnically homogeneous. This, however, does not mean that the Japanese are pure racially and has not been proven historically. Yes, a homogeneous society is stable, due to lack of racial tensions,as you mention, but there are other problems as well..

Interesting hub, but think the topic was a bit too broad for a hub this length.

Japan isn't the only ones who suffered from a homogeneous society. Here in the US during the days of the crusades people weren't allowed to explore new ideas so if anything seemed different from the normal then it was rejected and so for years a society remained with limit technology and basically ignorant to a better way of life.

Spanstar-great to learn about the crusading history.I had no idea about the information you shared with me.Now I understand how society can be manipulated by a few, only by limiting the exercise of knowledge.Thank you friend :)

Span Star, I just looked up "Crusade" in wikipedia and they only discussed the Crusade in Europe from the 12th century onwards; when was the "days of the crusades in the US" and could you clarify what you discussed above? Thanks!

Andromida, yes, societies were manipulated by a few, this was done quite a few times throughout history. Even in Japan, during WWII, the kids had to say in school, "Tojo is a great guy"!("Tojo" is the guy who headed the military govt during WWII) And what about the cultural revolution in China?

andromida profile image

andromida 6 years ago Author

@mtkomori-Thanks for your feedback. Those manipulative individuals need to be filtered out from our history.Unfortunately, today's world also being manipulated by a few individuals-nothing has changed.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/crusades

any vigorous, aggressive movement for the defense or advancement of an idea, cause, etc.: a crusade against child abuse.

(often initial capital letter) any of the military expeditions undertaken by the Christians of Europe in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries for the recovery of the Holy Land from the Muslims.

We can look at the Salem Witch Hunt as a crusade:

There were several undiscovered witches, she said, and they yearned to destroy the Puritans. Finding witches became a crusade—not only for Salem but all Massachusetts. Before long the crusade turned into a convulsion, and the witch-hunters ultimately proved far more deadly than their prey.

We can look at the evil done to the Jewish people by the Germany people as a crusade.

Worse than homogeneous perfect society, apparently the dream of both Hitler and myself, just that I was no psycho, is homogeneous diseased, defective, and wasted criminally, society. Please see my websites to understand what is going on, for it is precisely that.

prah justice 5 years ago

wow, that is an extensive achievement made at re-echoing an indispensable sociological subject. But come to think of all arguments made, i independently hold the conception that if the social structures of a heterogenous society are genuinely cooperative, the norm of reciprocity should cohesively destroy ethnocentrism making for societal integration. Also, homogenous societies may be too firm on outgroup homogenuity biasis. Thank, justice, ghana

Just a follow up on your reply to ocoonoccon:

When the country was created, while the citizen class people were of the Japanese native, most of the ruling families were actually directly from Korea.

I love what u guys have discussed here because I have always being against a homogenous society. I believe God has created all of us as the children of love and we have to be able to create a society that will make all of us exist in peace and harmony. Meaning we must look beyond our own boarders and extend that love to every child of God.We must all know that we are part of the puzzle of someone's life. We may never know where we fit but others will fill the holes in their lives with pieces of us. So if we run out of reasons to create a heterogeneous society, we should always remember that someone Else's life may never complete without it. I AM HUMBLED TO BE PART OF THIS VERY INTERESTING DISCUSSION.
