My Way Of Helping A Child

I didn't make any new years resolutions this year. I know I can't keep them. Instead I made a decisions to contribute to the H.O.W. movement. In my first H.O.W. hub, I wrote about what I wanted to do to help those people who need our help. One of the things I wanted to do was to help one or more people by sponsoring an organization. I also wrote about a woman who took care of me when I was a child and how she affected me by having a sponsored child.

I've had a few comments on that hub so far. One of the comments was from bravewarrior, who suggested I would take a look at Children International. I went to their web site to read more about the organization and what you can do for children living in poverty around the world.

It seemed like a very good organizations and I decided that NOW was the right time to do what I always wanted to do, and that was to sponsor a child somewhere else in the world by paying an amount of money every month. Children International have agencies in Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Mexico, Philippines, United States and Zambia.

You can choose to sponsor children in ages 0-17. You can also choose from what country you want a child. They provide you with a little information about the child, its family and the living conditions. H.O.W. could I choose one of these children? There were so many children who need help! I decided that I just had to choose someone who had been waiting for a sponsor a long time. I found this sweet looking boy named Albert. He is 4 years old and lives in Dominican Republic with his parents and his three siblings. He had been waiting for a sponsor for more that 900 days. Some of the children had been waiting for just some days or weeks. Albert was my choice.

I made my first payment today and I will contunue donating $25 every month. That's only about 2 % of my monthly salary, but with that sum I can provide Albert with medical and dental care, emergency food, educational support, family assistance, clothes, shoes and more things he could need.

Finally I have made a decision to do something good for someone who really needs it. It's going to be interested to get to know Albert by writing letters and see him grow up. Maybe I can even meet him some day. He's in the same age as my own children. Who knows, maybe they will meet one day too and share their thoughts, learn from each other and become friends. You'll never know.

By sponsoring a child like Albert, I feel good inside. I really hope this can change Albert's life and the life for his family for the better. I can't think of better start on a new year. I guess this is the best thing I have done in a long time for someone else. Now I just need to take care of the people around me and try to be kind, nice and helpful, because I'm up for billybuc's ”H.O.W. To Make A Difference: The 365/365 Challenge”.

We can change to world for the better as long as we do it together. Happy New Year!

Made, I am thrilled you acted on my suggestion! Children International actually came to my door one Saturday. I told them I was unable to give dollars but that I could spread the word about their organization. I wrote my first H.O.W. hub the next day about Children International. I am absolutely overjoyed that some good has come out of my promise to them.

Thank you so much for caring and acting!

bravewarrior, I think I read your hub, but I didn't remember it was you who wrote it. Thank you for giving me the link! I had been looking around for a good site and organization. I'm glad to see that H.O.W. is working by you and everyone else writing about this movement.

Made, This is fantastic! My husband and I recently started sponsoring (through another group) an 8 year old girl from the Phillipines. It is so rewarding when we receive her letters and cards. We know that we are doing something really good for her, but we get SO MUCH out of it ourselves. I am certain that you will find this to be true as well. You have only begun to nurture the seed. One day I expect that you will have a bountiful harvest. God bless you for doing this. Have a wonderful 2013!

-Donna

Donna Kay Bryan, it's nice to hear that your sponsoring is so rewarding. I really hope it's going to feel the same way for me. I would love to have a bunch of children myself, but for now two is enough - my husband says. Lol! This is one way to "have" another child. I'm really looking forward to the letters. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. :)

Made - I am very proud of you for your efforts and consider this a wonderful alternative.

My sister did this exactly 26 years ago with a child in Korea. One thing led to another and my wonderful nephew was brought into our lives. My sister adopted him at 3 mo.s and I am happy to report he is a well-adjusted wonderful young man of 26.

That's a wonderful story, shiningirisheyes. I really want to do something to change the world for the better. If I can help only one child, it's better than helping no child at all. Thank you!!!

I think its so great Made! Good luck with Albert. I'm sure you and your son will enjoy the experience. I sponsored children from Ireland back in the eighties and its an experience we will always remember. We are still in contact with one of the boys.
