Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant

Church gathers local Christians to protest

Kudankulam nuclear reactor problem has been left unresolved for months now. The protests over the nuclear reactor at Kudankulam started when the local people inspired and led by the Church demanded the closure of the plant due to fear. The Kudankulam nuclear reactor was constructed with the collaboration of the Russian government. The construction started around a decade back and has been completed now. The nuclear plant is scheduled to go into production mode in December this year. Just when it is about to produce nuclear energy, the Church started gathering the local people, mainly Christians, and put up a spirited opposition to the plant. What lent credence to the opposition was the support the protesters received from the Tamil Nadu State Government led by the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

If Abdul Kalam is not knowledgeable, are the Christian priests knowledgeable?

In the beginning, it was thought and believed that the Church was opposing the nuclear plant because of genuine concern about possible accident. But the Church had refused to heed to the sane advice of scientists, administrators and officials. It had been pointed out that so far no accident had taken place in any nuclear installation in India including Kalpakkam nuclear reactor located in the same State of Tamil Nadu. The former Indian President Abdul Kalam visited the plant site and pronounced that it was a safe plant to operate. But the Church questioned the credibility of Abdul Kalam. They stated that Abdul Kalam was a space scientist and not a nuclear scientist. They argued that Abdul Kalam could not possess expertise in nuclear matters. But going by this argument, the Church and its priests are not nuclear scientists. Then how can their argument are taken in?

Church may spread their agitation against other nuclear plants in India

It was also pointed out by some sources that the Church was receiving foreign money and had a vested interest in stopping the nuclear reactor from functioning. It was even argued that some foreign countries inimical to India’s progress were using the Church to block the nuclear power plant at Kudankulam. Once their strategy succeeds, the Church will be vigorously gathering the Christian community spread over India to press for closure of other nuclear installations like Trombay, Kalpakkam etc.

Hindu-Christian conflict

Scientists had also pointed out that keeping a nuclear plant like Kudankulam without functioning for weeks together was dangerous to the plant security. But the Church is dismissing this warning and continuing its agitation. Seeing the invisible foreign hand in play, the Hindu fundamentalist organisations like the RSS, Viswa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Munnani etc led by the principal opposition party BJP have involved themselves in the controversy against the Church. These Hindu organisations are demanding opening of the Kudankulam nuclear reactor in the name of patriotism. Thus the protest movement has turned into a Hindu-Christian conflict.

Government of India should use force to disperse the Church

The government of India should use force to disperse the Church and make the Kudankulam nuclear plant functional. Its capacity to generate 1000 MW of power will solve Tamil Nadu State’s power problem to some extent. The world over, nuclear power plants have been functioning. A few plants like Chernobyl in Russia and Fukishima in Japan have met with accidents. But there are many nuclear power plants which are functioning for many decades without any accident.

Church has never supported national causes

If you see the motives of the Church functioning India, it becomes clear that their agitation is not due to fear, but due to inner motive to stop India’s progress. The Church has never supported national security at times of need. In all India Pakistan wars, the Church had never taken a strong position and demanded crushing of Pakistan. The same was the case when China attacked India.

Church had never protested against nuclear plants in the past

There are twenty nuclear power plants functioning in six States in India. The Church had not taken up any protests against these nuclear power plants so far. But it is interested in stopping the Kudankulam nuclear power plant from functioning. The Church had started these protests only when the construction of the plant was complete and the plant was about to be operational.

BJP and the Hindus will taste defeat at the hands of the Church

The Indian government should use force and disperse these protesters. It should start production from the plant immediately. Any further delay will only harm the nuclear plant beyond redemption. It may also result in serious accident. But will the government of India care? The Central government as well as State government are wary of using the Christians’ vote bank. If the governments forcibly disperse the Church and start the nuclear power plant, then the Church is capable of issuing a directive to all the Christians in India not to vote for the Congress government in the next general elections. Sonia Gandhi, herself being a Christian, will not risk this. Therefore Sonia Gandhi is likely to instruct the Manmohan Singh government to either close down the Kudankulam nuclear power plant or at least not to start production till the 2014 parliamentary elections are over. Moreover, Sonia Gandhi will also follow the directives of the Church and the Christian priests as she herself is a faithful Christian. Therefore the Hindu organisations will meet with a big defeat at the hands of the Christian leaders and the Church. The BJP will also eat a humble pie before the Church. Sonia is the real leader of India and not BJP or the Hindu organisations.

I beleive, the plant should start functioning as early as possible for the sake of the people of India. The govt should have the will power to crush the striking group.

Dear James David,

I thank you for your valuable comments. I really appreciate such a view coming from a Christian even though the Church is behind this needless agitation.

Best wishes to you,

Hi author, your article is the worst one i have ever read. You are trying to tie the relegion with science shows your stupidity. As long as you can not sure about natural disasters, you can not sure about the safety of the reactor. Simple reason why people are against this. Probably you dick head may not understand this truth.

If science has to develop only after natural disasters have been cured fully, no science will develop forever. Natural disasters cannot be prevented but can be controlled through improved technology. Number of nuclear plants working perfectly are much more than the number of nuclear plants that have met with accidents.

I am not mixing religion with science. It is the Church (that too only the Catholic Church and not the protestant Church) that is spearheading the movement against the nuclear plant. So I have to mention about the Church in my article. I am not mixing science with Church. I am a supporter of science and wants it to develop without any impediment from the church. The Church had done enough to suppress science in the medieval times. Let them keep quiet at least in this modern age.
