Activated Ministries - In Recognition of Service Scholarship Program~

Updated on September 4, 2012

Spring Semester Scholarship Recipients

Are you looking for a charity that sponsors education? How about one that sponsors college educations and provides scholarships for missionaries who are working to make our world a better place and help those in need. The needs a missionary fills may be as simple as providing a meal, encouragement or support, or as complex as providing essential health care, a safe place to live, an education or spiritual guidance. Here at Activated Ministries, our aim is to provide assistance to these dedicated individuals and their families, many of whom, due to the sacrificial nature of their work, have been unable to save for a college education for either themselves or their children.

When you purchase materials and products from Activated Ministries, or donate a car to charity, your donation is used to sponsor a variety of charitable endeavors, including the In Recognition of Service Scholarship program or IROS Scholarships. By donating your car or other contributions to Activated Ministries, you are enabling us to provide tuition assistance to current and former missionaries and their children, as they either pursue their new career goals or acquire skills to complement their missionary work.

Activated Ministries launched the IROS Scholarships Program in the Fall of 2010. To date, 120 scholarships have been granted to qualifying recipients

both at home and abroad.

We would like to introduce some of the IROS scholarships recipients for the spring semester, 2011.

Brandon

Mission Field: Pacific Islands

Brandon W. served for several years as a missionary in the Pacific Islands. He is now working towards obtaining a bachelors degree in Health Science at the Mesa Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. His future goals include medical school or physician's assistant training, in the hopes that he can better assist humanitarian mission trips to areas where medical care is inadequate and where he can truly make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

"Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to continue my education and pursuing a career in the health field. I hope to be able to ease the burdens of those in need with the experience and education I earn through my degree and continue a life of service to others." - Brandon W.

Virginia - Mission Field: Peru, Phillipines and Bolivia

Virginia E. was born in Bolivia to a missionary family. Her father was Peruvian and her mother was from the Phillipines., so Virginia grew up between Bolivia, the Phillipines and Peru. Her missionary father took a job teaching at a local university in Peru, which enabled Virginia and her brothers to begin their studies in university. However, due to the economic situation, jobs in Peru pay very little and are hard to come by. Virginia was facing financial hardship trying to stay in school and was unsure if she would be able to continue before being granted a scholarship by Activated Ministries in the spring of 2011. She is now able to continue working towards getting her degree in Tourism at the Universidad Nacional Santiago Antunez de Mayolo.

"Here in this part of Peru, Huaraz, people are quite poor and the parents have to make a lot of sacrifices to send their kids to college. I don't want to disappoint or take for granted the effort that my parents are making. Now with the generous support of Activated Ministries I feel really blessed and privileged to have the opportunity to enhance my gifts so I could be of greater help to society in the future. Thank you, Activated Ministries!" - Virginia E.

Priya

Mission Fields: Far East Asia

Priya R. was born to missionary parents and was raised in India, Sri-Lanka and Nepal. From a very young age the dire needs that many of the people in these countries face daily impacted Priya and she decided to help in whatever way she could. That passion took her back to India, Taiwan and, most recently, China, where she studied Madarin. Last year, she returned to Australia to enroll in university. After receiving an In Recognition of Service Scholarship, Priya enrolled in college and is now in her semester of study where she is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science and International Studies along with a Diploma of Languages in Mandarin Chinese in the University of Melbourne, one of Australia's top rated universities. Priya aims to use her a B.A. in International Studies combined with a diploma of languages in Mandarin Chinese, to establish a non-profit here in Australia that will serve to fund projects around the developing world.

Alicia C., from New Orleans, Louisiana, has lived as a missionary for the past five years. She first joined the Peace Corps in 2004 and spent the next two years in Atteforme, Niger in a small village of 500 people. In 2006, Alicia, through a program with her church, decided to go to Bratislava, Slovakia and work as a high school teacher at the Evanjelické Lýceum [Lutheran High School]. After five years, she had taught hundreds of students and saw one class through from their first year of study to their graduation. With help from the In Recognition of Service Scholarship, Alicia will begin a Masters' program in Public Health at Tulane University this fall. Once she completes her education, Alicia hopes to return to West Africa and help to coordinate educational programs related to maternal health.

"Entering school again after two years of volunteer service and five years on a small local salary is, to say the least, a financially daunting task, so thank you once again for the valuable help you provide. I'm sure you have provided many members of the missionary community with a gift they surely need and deserve and I am privileged to be among them." Alicia C.
