Call for submissions: As an acquisitions editor for Schiffer Publishing, I am looking to receive book proposals for a variety of topics relating to ghosts and mind/body/spirit. These book ideas should have a regional focus that tackle niche markets. Unfortunately, though I really like books that apply to a full spectrum of people, at this time, a more localized region is imperative. I've had many books pitched to me that have wide appeal, i.e. titles like Ghosts of America, or Learning Psychic Powers, etc. When I've pitched these ideas upward, I usually get a no from the publisher. I get the yes for REGIONAL books because we know how to sell them. From time to time we do accept a topical book, but these are usually test books that we've assigned current "proven" authors.
So the best way to start with us is regionally, and then, at a future time, once we see how well your book does in the market place, you might be able to pitch a larger-audience book to us. Please also note that single-family hauntings do not do well for us and though you certainly should include them in your book, there should be a variety of other hauntings and places included as well.
Additionally, please realize that we have authors writing all around the country--the area you want to write about may not be available at this time, but I do keep proposals and have often called authors back when the trends have changed. So a no may not be a no, but a not now. Proposals should include an outline of the prospective stories in your book, a sample story, a sample photograh, and a marketing survey (find the survey at www.schifferghosts.com and please pay close attention to numbers 10-16; skipping these important questions will most assuredly offer you a no from the publisher.) Please email proposal materials in ONE email to dinah@schifferbooks.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
Me personally! I am an author--ghost books, animal communication, science fiction, etc. and my upcoming book is called Psychic Pets: Solving Paranormal Mysteries, due out in the Spring of 2010. Visit my site to see my book and animal projects. roseberrybooks.com
