Once, as a college student, I "stole" the annual writing award from the English department.  An Education major never won before, nor since.  That was many years ago.  Since then I have seen 20 states, three continents, and the world through my students and my children's eyes.  I have seen war and all that goes with it.  I have walked on roads tread upon by the Magi and stood where Alexander the Great died.  I have seen the tomb of Jonah the birthplace of Abraham.  I have been the first American that hundreds of people ever met.  I have often been the only American to ever sit as a guest for a humble meal.  Men have tried to kill me, but more have sought my hand for help and cooperation.  I have had one wife for 15 years and have loved no other.  In all this, I have seen the work of the hands of time and the hands of providence.  I have seen the sun shine upon the just and the unjust.  There is a riddle in it all.  Max is the biproduct of my experiences and their effect upon me.  There may be a part of the great riddle buried in it, but that is for the reader to decide.
