I'm a Mixed Martial Arts fan since UFC1. When I discovered that sport, I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. It looked like a sport from the future. The science-fiction version of boxing. Ultimate Fighting from outer space!..
I was hooked.
One of the aspect of the sport I like best, beside the fights and the "SF" aspect of it, is the internet aura surrounding the sport.
Fans from all over the world have an almost instant impact on the sport and fighters. Lots of them are posting and lurking MMA board regularly, sometimes at their own expense. Opinions and critics from fans posting on boards like Sherdog are taken seriously and lots of fighters are using those boards for self promotion or seminars.
MMA is probably the sport where the fans are the closest to the stars and where the stars themselves behave like die-hard fans...
Most of the fighters are using the internet tools like no other athletes. They have blogs, forums, myspace or facebook pages where you can easily get in contact with them. They really act like they are taking the fans into consideration. Most of them look like down to earth regular guys who are really close to their supporters.
This is what make this sport so unique for me.
