The have found 2 main things influcence whether you are right or left handed, one is a gene which controls which hemisphere controls certain functions. The other is environmental high levels of testosterone on a developing foetus can cause left handedness because testosterone stunts the growth of the left brain hemisphere causing the right hemisphere to take up the slack, therefore left handed.
It is not 'passed down' in most cases. Im a lefty and none of my family is, not even distant relatives. It's a crazy thing.
