Lots of really good writers are never really recognized within their own lifetimes; at least not in the sense of becoming famous and wealthy and so forth. I think a person is a writer or isn't a writer. It's really that simple.
You can learn to write, but that doesn't make you a writer. If you write all the time, and you need to write, and you do it no matter if you are rewarded or not, then you're probably a writer. If you want to be a writer so you can be famous and have writerish friends and money and so forth and be on Oprah a couple of times, you probably are just having a nice daydream. Enjoy it, but don't take it too seriously.
Not all people become famous and not all writers become famous. Doing what you love should be its own reward, and this is especially true of the arts. Keep writing. Share and publish what you write, and you may be recognized. Or you may not. Either way you'll be doing what you love and that's more than 90% of the people on earth get to do.
