All right, here's the thing: I'm sorry I can't recall the source, but this is in no way my original thought I'm just recalling it well (tony robbins elaborated on this for sure):

we humans (my bagle's the same by the way) inevitable end up being compelled towards any given action by one of two possible intentions: to move closer to some pleasure, or further from some pain. Research has shown that a stronger motivator from the two is the second: further from pain. (may be that's why an educator should find it a professional challenge to find something motivating about the matter, or better yet-- the way it's perceived) ... hope it helped
