I would support a maximum age of 75. Justice Stevens is 89 and could drop dead or be afflicted by dementia at any time, if he's not already. Souter provided a good example by retiring at the top of his game and when there is a president in office who is likely to appoint a moderate replacement with similar views to his (Souter's) own. He could as easily have retire last year and let Bush appoint another conservative like Alito or Roberts. Instead, he wisely waited to allow Obama to appoint his replacement.

A dog is for life. However, judges could be elected - rather than appointed.

Life election for anything in a "democratic" country really makes no sense.

The whole point of America is that no one regime has omnipotent rule and that is exactly what has been constituted. If a judge is 80 years old how can he or she adapt to the changing times with any accuracy?

This isn't to say every old person can't change, but it is alot harder when you have been doing the same thing for 40 years.

Also I don't think younger people should be judges, there should be an over 30 age limit, but there should be re-election so that judges cannot get too comfortable in their positions and forget about what the people really need.

I feel there should be term limits for the Supreme Court and Congress, in fact, all political offices. Should all offices have term limits, and more frequent elections "by the people" - I feel those in office can be held to account much better; their behavior and actions less influenced by "special interests" and more influenced by "the will of the people". Just a thought.

If I could travel in a time machine back to the forming of this country, I would beg the founders to do 2 things: include term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court.

We are seeing an example going on right now with the senate hearing prior to approval of our next court justice. There are obvious discrepancies in this nominees background but the democrats have the numbers to get her in baring a complete breakdown like something we would see in a Perry Mason episode. So my answer is no, it should not be a life time position simply because someone can get appointed based on nothing but the number game of politics. if they do a good job then they should have no problem keeping their post from election to election. As it is now they are answerable to nobody once they are appointed and we say no one is above the law.

I do not think they should be elected for life, When they are elected for life they do not vote with the will of the people. Give us back America as it was written in the Constition, give us back the respect for our Flag like we had year ago. In our Schools, Court House, Post Office. I am tired of a few taking this right away.
