There was no standards set that time. So they married among themselves to multiply which was the only option available at the time. In fact Cain and Abel were only the first born of Adam and Eve they had more sons and daughters too.

If you'll note, people who lived during the first generations after direct creation, had lifespans that were 900 years, etc... Sons born to Adam and Eve (Cain & Abel for example) might not have married for a hundred or two hundred years after their own births. In this case, the women they married might have been several generations apart from them, by todays standard of generations being about 40 years in length. They would not have grown up with these siblings and would have been more like distant cousins to them than sisters.

I think it's important to answer this question honestly. I myself have wondered about this when I attempted reading the entire Bible on my own to gain first hand knowledge. By the way, I discovered astonishing facts from this singular venture. The answer is simply that they married their own sisters. Abraham is a good example of this. Sarah was actually Abraham's half sister and she became his wife (Gen 20:12). There had been two attempts to take Sarah, who was misconstrued as Abraham's sister alone by deception, as a wife (Gen 12:13,19; 20:2,5). Obviously, Sarah must have been very pretty to attract such attention. Also in similar fashion, Isaac lied about Rebekah being his wife(Gen 26:9). Rebekah and Isaac were first cousins, also Jacob and Rachael/Leah (Gen 24:23-24; 29:10, 15-18). But what I can certainly infer is that there was a strong culture of sexual fidelity. The issue of sexual intercourse did not arise until she became his wife and God thwarted efforts by two men to commit adultery with Sarah. To my understanding of the time, a wife is the woman the man was sleeping with. Otherwise, she would be a prostitute. When Jacob's daughter was taken advantage of in Gen 34 by someone who was in love with her, it resulted in a massacre. Sexual chastity was obviously upheld in their culture. However, the practice in contemporary culture where relatives don't marry must have began with the Law of Moses where God specifically commanded abstinence from sexual relations among close relatives and from other forms of sexual immorality like gay relationships and bestiality (Lev 20:10-21). Even in contemporary times when we are supposed to be under grace, sexual fidelity is still the standard as when we were under the Law (Acts 15:28-29). I guess the earlier culture of marrying among relatives facilitated procreation. Men became divided when God introduced different tongues among them (Gen 11:1-9). Anyhow, since it was God who created us, we must live according to his standard and expectations.

Adam and Eve's children married among themselves. Starting with Cain who knew his wife which at that time was one his sisters . Lamech the son of Enoch who was a son of Cain had two wifes, Genesis 4:17-19.

Seth also married a wife and had sons andf daughters who came later. It is obvious that Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters, Genesis 5:6-7. The Bible doesn't say how many but Adam lived 930 years and produced a lot of children.

What came first the chicken or the egg? If you answer my riddle i'll answer yours. No, I was just kidding. :)

The law had not been given, sin had not took it's foothold on the human gene pool. So they were allowed to marry their sisters and brothers without it being called insest. God knew that as man progresed furhter and futher away from the perfect bodies that Adam and Eve had that marrieing ken would cause all kinds of birth defects. God does not make remedies as an after thought. He foreknew that this would happen so he made sure this was coverd under the law.

You brought up a very good point. I wondered the same about Noah and his family. The story follows the Creation story. Who was there to marry? I did some research on this. If Cain married there had to be other people on the Earth but the Bible says Adam and Eve were the first two people. Adam had other children according to the Bible but never gives names. After all he was 900 years old and could have plenty. They could easily married each other given the time because it was common to marry relatives. The Bible tells of two accounts of Adam and Eve. Current archaelogical dating techniques now shows there were humans more than 6000 ( which we thought anyway s ) years ago before Adam and Eve which means the story would not literally be true. However, in the 1980's scientists claimed all humans have one common African ancestor. There are many myths surrounding Creation and evolution of humans. You can believe what you want. Its not denouncing the Bible in any way, just shedding some light on the subject.

People try to play the gotcha game with questions like these. If you believe the biblical account, the only logical conclusion to a question like," Where did Cain get his wife?" He married his sister. The Bible clearly states, Eve was the mother of all living, Not everyone born is listed. God told them to be fruitful and multiply. And they did just that. It also says, they bore sons AND daughters. Cain obviously married one of them.

Just read the Bible. It says they married women from the city of Ur, not that God made them from ribs or any of the sort. However, that does raise the question of, "a city?" Yes, the city of Ur. A city full of people, males and females.

Some people believe the two accounts of Genesis account for this--they say the first version is about the original creation of the first men and women and that Adam and Eve were specially created humans that were more advanced than the others.

Other accounts say they married their sisters.

Personally, I don't know and think maybe a third option of created wives came into play, that Adam and Eve is perhaps a figurative tale of how the original sin came to be, or that there might have been another source of the wives.

Those who take the Bible seriously should not. It is the worst book of fiction ever written. Why dont you find out the true origins of the bible, the origins of Judeo/Christianity which comes from Ancient Egypt and its religion. Read about Council of Nicea and Emperor Constantine and find out how the bible was compiled leaving out over 50% of scriptures. Read the true reason why Christianity was made the official religion of the Roman Empire. Read about all the mistranslations and editing of the bible remembering that there are NO extant orininal authored manuscripts. Then you will realise how you have been hoodwinked.

Very good question.

First of all, according to the bible, Adam and Eve both lived to be about 900 or so years old. Give or take a hundred years :-)Seems to me like plenty of time for having children, raising them and seeing them raise theirs. We are given the names of the few that are relevant to God's purposes in the bible. In just the same way Jesus' (half) brothers and sisters are only mentioned in one place (If I remember correctly) in the gospels. The fact that the descendants of Adam and Eve aren't ALL mentioned shouldn't be a problem. One important thing to remember is that when Adam and Eve were created they were perfect. When they disobeyed, their genetic structure did not immediately deteriorate. Just like they didn't immediately die physically. Over time their offspring were able to marry and have children without the physical consequences we have today.

Hope that helps.

Their kids married each other. I know it sounds wrong. but the Bible says Adam lived over 900yrs. During that time many children were born therefore they had no choice but to marry each other. Laws of incest had their origin at the time of Moses(Leviticus 18-20) Since Adam & Eve were the first people the gene pool would have remained clean for many generations and very low risk of deformity like the risk today. God gave the laws to help protect against this as well as protecting individuals, families and socitities at large.

Adam & Eve can't just be a fable or well intentioned poem to explain humanity. We all had to start from someone.

If you, as many of my Christian friends do, take the Bible to be the literal and unalterable truth, you can't answer that question.

There is no mention of any other human beings being alive at the time, since Adam and Eve were the first two created. Speculation is not allowed by such folks because the Bible is infallible and complete, and no one is allowed to alter it, add to it or change it in any way.

Therefore, there were no other human beings around then. No answer becomes possible under such a strict understanding.

Either this means that the Bible has been holding out on us and there is more to be told, but somehow it is not being told, or the story is simply that, a story, not to be taken literally. You make your choice. No cheating now!

Now in the Jewish version Adam had a first wife (It gets pretty racy and sounds like a TV soap opera when you read it!) But Christians do not allow for Adam to have had a first wife, so Eve is it. They had sons only, end of story, and apparently, end of all human life on Earth. I guess that means we are all figments of our own imagination!

Carbon dating shows that the earth went back millions of years. Ice drilling etc. Its hard to buy into the story unless you take the view that both the world was created millions of years ago and that God only stepped in 5,000 years ago for the genesis story. Personally if I heard the virgin birth story today I would not believe it so readily, so the christmas story that actually happened earlier in the year (the catholic church changed it to coincide with pagan celebrations so it would be accepted more readily) is a bit of a stretch. I am happy for people to believe whatever they want, as long as they don't impose it as truth on others.

You can not take the Genesis in a literal way, since it is epic poetry. It is a beautiful poetry of the origin of the world as conceive by people at that age. If Adan and Eve did ever exist, the were not the only people at earth. So that will explain the other people walking by them.

Depends on how much fantasy your mind wants with this subject.

There aren't a lot of other choices are there?

So here's another twist: What if Adam and Eve were symbols of early humankind, iconic examples of the "every man" and "every woman" and what if we really don't know the complete details of the "beginning."

We have proof of dinosaurs, but they don't figure into the Bible, do they? At least not definitively. So I think there's more to the story than the Bible provides.

Genesis 4:14 states that Cane was afraid that after being driven out of the land that anyone coming across him might kill him. This indicates that there were other human like people upon the earth whether the Lord created them or not. God may have created many many humans scattered upon the face of the earth OR ???? why does it have to be either or? and not both. I ask? could there not be some truth to the theory of evolution and then either Cain or the sons of God that came down to the earth and took all that they wanted, the daughters of man Gen. 6:2 thus creating the "Missing link" and also locking in the generic code that we still have today. I do not love this concept nor do I necessarily agree with it yet I do accept the possibility. Cains was driven out as punishment for killing his brother, I do not believe that his sister would have been punished also.. If not Cain did not mate with his sister. He found a wife in Nod.

God made Adam and Eve, God makes everything perfect, because he is perfect, (if not so he would not be perfect.) Adam and Eve transgressed and fell, and they were not longer perfect, yet their bodies did not have all the problems that come out in inter-breeding as today. So the initial inter-breeding was not a problem at the first. Adam body was so great he lived, some say 900 years, others up to 1500 years. That takes a great build body to be able to do this.

As for the time of Noah, I am not sure of the answer, except if God wanted it done, he could bless them and make them not have problems. He can do anything, and I believe it was by his wisdom this was done, and by his blessings that this was done. Do not deny the power of God and try to understand the mysteries. His logic and wisdom is not our logic and wisdom.

And for the dinosours, etc. he need to create the coal, oil and other reserves for us to live. Coal comes form marsh and pedmoss typef area. So for these to thrive, he needed a complete eco-system to support it. I.e Dinosours, insects, etc. He planned it all out for us so the day he was ready to place Adam and Eve on the planet and send his children down, so that we may develop our faith, and prove our worthiness to follow him. So that we may be rewarded and become more like him, (Wouldn't a perfect being want others to be perfect like him?)

Reading the English version of Genesis is one thing. But reading the original Hebrew text is something completely different!

This response is based on the original Hebrew text of Genesis. But you can look for the clues left in the English version provided you're not familiar with the original Hebrew.

100s of 1000s of years pass in Genesis 1, alone. Large amounts of time pass during and between verses! It is not as instantaneous as the English version makes it appear. Six days is not literal; in Hebrew its more like Six Chronicles or Six Ages!

Mankind initially evolved in Genesis 1:24 where it says: Let the earth bring forth (this is Evolution) Living Creatures (this is Human Beings)! They were running around at the same (primitive) state of evolution as the other animals and reptiles that evolved.

In Genesis 1:26, the Elohiym (a collective God Continuum who arrived in Genesis 1:2) said: Let us make mankind! Mankind was the result of making the primitive humans over in the image and likeness of the Elohiym.

In essence, the original statement was more like: Let's give these primitive humanoids a MAKEOVER so they look more like US; i.e. standing erect; rational thought; capabile of speech. But these people were more like: Neanderthals.

In Genesis 2:7 (100s/1000s of years later), a completely different thing happened! A single Elohiym (what is meant by the LORD God [YHWH of the Elohiym]) fashioned an individual Human of his own. This was the next level of upgrade. This Human resembled Cro-Magnon; the first prototype! He was immediately segregated from his predecesors by confining him to the Garden (of Eden).

There were hords of people living OUTSIDE the Garden. This guy, commonly known as Adam, was the only Human living INSIDE the Garden. After the humans (Adam & Eve) were expelled from the Garden, they became well acquainted with everyone else! And were probably treated very special! That is why, after Cain murdered Abel, his primary concern was that everyone who loved Abel would want to avenge him!

The answer to this question is more than obvious; however I will answer with a bit of elaboration for the benefit of those who truly want to learn more about god's origional purpose:

Man was created a perfect human being with the intent being that they never die, being given access to the "other" tree the bible talks about: the tree of life that was also in the garden of Eden. When God placed man in the garden with the mandate to be fruitful and fill the earth it's obvious that each subsequent offspring would mate with one another, much as every other living creature does. Of course, this to us now sounds quite barbaric and inappropriate. But the thing is this type of aversion we have for such a thing didn't exist then at that time. They didn't even recognize their being naked until after eating of the forbidden fruit and their "eyes were opened".

Thus the same applies or would apply for mating, it was intended that they mate with each other and fill the earth. The fact that the earth is now filled with people bears out that the act of mating with one another did in fact occur; but with the passing of time and the further we grow from perfection and not having access to the life-sustaining tree of life, mating with close(r) relatives now breeds defects and deformity, and this is in large part the reason for this trendency to now be something not encouraged.

Hopefully this is a reasonably good and clear explanation/answer to your question. I encourage you to read hubs by daledad8 for more insight(s), and questions answered...Truth Is...
