There are really three ways to void a check.

1) Write VOID across the front and void in your register

2) Get the merchant to return the check with out cashing it and then accomplish number 1

3) Go to the bank and have a stop payment put on the check, this will void it, but you will incur a stop payment fee

If you have gone beyond being able to stop payment then you will need to talk to the merchant to provide you with a refund.
