Start with a simple 'What If?'

What if this happened in the real world?

From there, go on with 'What would happen next?' and continue on your track to see where it goes. All of my short stories come to me this way, and it gets easier to do with practice. :)

Write what you know, or are willing to learn about.

It doesn't matter what you write about. Just start writing. The more you write, the more you'll come up with more ideas for what to write about. Start with the rain, the sun, the paperboy, your favorite food, your annoying neighbors, anything. Once you see those words on the paper, you will want to make them better. Rewriting is the goal, at this point.

Writing is a process. The beginning is where you just slap those words down on the paper (or computer screen). Don't worry about spelling or grammar or anything except telling, describing, reviewing or suggesting, whatever! Let the words flow. Do this, freely, unencumbered for a period of time.

Now read it over. Move stuff (ideas, words, paragraphs) around on the paper or screen. Rewrite. Throw out what you don't like. Add more to it. Walk away from it. Come back and read it again. Rewrite. Love what you're doing. Make a game of it. Wallow in the process.

Don't worry about how much time you're spending. Unless, of course you're getting paid and have a due date. If so, you probably already are familiar with the process.

BTW, do you read a lot? If not, make it a practice to do so. A lot of ideas for what to write about can come from or because of something you read. Good luck!

I go with the cliched but true answer, write what you know. Many years ago I went through my poetry phase and I got very pretentious about it and tried to become someone I wasn't. I tried to use styles that weren't my natural voice, I was caught up in trying to sound like a poet and most of my stuff was crap. One day I just decided to shoot straight and really open up and I wrote about myself.IT was the most honest and heartfelt poem I had ever written and while I thought it was totally bush league my writing pals loved it because they recognized it as honest and sometimes the art of writing is just honest observations about the world we live in.

STOP AND THINK ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL. HOW DO YOU FEEL?

GO TO A MUSEUM AND LOOK AT AN INTERESTING PICTURE. THEN WRITE ABOUT HOW IT LOOKS TO YOU, OR ABOUT A MYSTERY OF IT. LIKE THE MONE LISA. WHY IS SHE SMILING? AND WHY IS SHE ALWAYS LOOKING AT YOU? GLAD I COULD HELP (IF I DID!)

Bye Till Next Request

Answer question 5W +1 H. What, who, where, when, why and how of any kind. You will feel difficult to start, if you want to perfect and the fear of bad votes.

Happy writing...

Two questions for you?

1. What do you know the most about? It must be something you love.

2. Do it because you don't want to stop.

I use something I wrote some time ago: "Live as if everything I do, say or write will be published around the world, and I am not ashamed."
