I have tried continously to copy and paste adsense and amazon unit codes into my hubs in order to create advertisements for both but they never seem to take. Please help.

You never need to paste any advertising codes into hubs. AdSense ads are added automatically, and to place amazon products you just add an amazon capsule. Just make sure the status says active next to AdSense and Amazon on your affiliate settings page, and you should be good to go.
