Why did Twitter take off and Facebook and MySpace did not do as well?

I think Facebook and MySpace have done pretty well, in fact insanely well compared to 99% of websites!
MySpace has dropped off a bit and is evolving into something else, Facebook is still huge. Twitter is the new big thing, and it plays to the Lowest Common Denominator, basically no big brain use required (although some people obviously do, and usually have the following to go with it!).
Twitter is quick and fun, and is an extension of texting, which to my surprise became huge in the US, it already was in Europe but I thought America would be too lazy, I was happily proven wrong!
I think there is space for all these social media websites, and Twitter will level out at some point, probably when the next one comes along.
