How to spend a day in New York City?

It really depends on what you enjoy doing. If you like art, for instance, then check out the Met, the Whitney or the Guggenheim museums. If you're into more touristy stuff, then go to the top of the Empire State Building or take the ferry out to the Statue of Liberty. I you like shopping, first do some window shopping (or real shopping if you can afford it) on 5th Avenue, then head down to SoHo where there are more funky store. If you want to get a taste of New York's multicultural neighborhoods, head to Chinatown or Little Italy. There's so much to do, it's difficult to take in the city in a day, so it's probably better to focus on one aspect of it.

The must-see spot for me in Grand Central. The old station has true elegance. It prompts the imagination to picture the city in a different era ... It's like a black and white photograph come to life. For passersby, the natural lighting and the high, high ceilings of the terminal give the illusion of some elbow and/or breathing room amid the bustle of commuters. Stop and admire (though avoid rush hours), then catch public transportation to the next stop.

We went by train and got a hop-on-hop-off tour bus ticket and it took us straight to the ferry for the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and shopping at Maceys etc. We started early and finished late!

In the morning catch the early ferry over to The Statue of Liberty, spend a few hours visiting the museum of imigration (the ferry stops there on the way to and from the statue) Lunch at Macy's, then a ride around Central Park on a horse drawn cart. Watch the sun go down from the top of the Empire State Building. Dinner at a restaurant around Time Square - Bubba Gump's is great fun.
