wordscribe 41's response is excellent, however, you can eradicate nits without using expensive chemical treatments.
Cover the hair with conditioner and comb through using a fine tooth comb to remove any lice. This needs to be done every other day. I was advised to do this by my doctor and it worked beautifully - plus I didn't have to put up with the awful smell of chemical in the house.
You also need to alert other parents and your childs school teacher to the fact that you have found the nits. Unless all your child's friends are also free of the little blighters you will continue to see re-infestation.
Good luck!
